Sri Lanka are comfortably placed at 289 for 8 at the end of first day of first cricket test against England being played at Galle, Sri Lanka. At one stage Sri Lanka were 15 for 3 loosing wickets at regular intervals. they lost their seventh wicket at the score of 191, England threatening to fold the Sri Lankan innings bellow 250 but Mahela fought brilliantly with the help of tailenders finishing the day comfortably at 289 for 8. He was at the crease Not out on 168 with 20 fours and 3 sixes of 290 balls, no other batsman could cross 27. Anderson was the most successful bowler for England claiming three for 3 for 56 of 17 overs. Sumit Patel and Stuart Broad were other successful bowlers who claimed 2 and 1 wickets respectively. England have let Sri Lanka off the hook and may find it difficult to save the match on a pitch which is likely to deteriorate as the match progresses.

Great job from the captain. It is a long time he had been in a good form and this is the time for it. Now a days Srilanka is getting worst. They have talented players but still they are the ones to have minus point. Hope Srilanka will have this in their safe hands.

Thank you wonderboy. It appears Mahela has rejuvenated after being reappointed as captain. He is performing at his best. he has also improved in leadership skills as was seen in tri series in Australia.

well I was not aware of this series before this discussion. Surely,as a captain as a senior player,Jayawardene had played a good innings to save his team from getting all out for low score. 289 is not a big total, but as it is test match, they can make it up in next innings. But England batting is also good, so an interesting match in the progress.

Thank you venkit. 289 should be considered as a good score on sub continent wickets in the first innings. Although England has got a good batting line up they are not sp good against spin bowling and traditionally Sri Lanka is a force in spin bowling on thir home grounds. Another 50 runs and Sri Lanka should be comfortable. Let us see how things shape up tomorrow. @ Haripotter, Is it not too much to expect?

Surely England is weak against spin bowling.. And england have surrendered for 193 in first innings.. S.Randiv took 2 wickets and herath took 6 wickets.. So now I think Srilanka is in the driving state. But now Sl is 14-3, so this is still progressing as a good match..

Looks like you are a passionate cricket follower. Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangkarra and Sanath Jayasuriya were great Lankan batsmen who bought them so much success over the years. The current Sri Lankan team is in transition and is struggling quite a lot.

Good old test cricket at its best, that's why i love this format of the game most. The problem with England is that they are not ready to come out of their comfort zones in subcontinent conditions.Against India in 2008 and Pakistan recently same thing happened. They let the opposition get off the hook easily after being in commanding positions, don't we remember the famous India victory on a rank turner when England could not defend mammoth score of 387.This time they are playing against a team like Srilanka who are strong at home ,but overall they have been poor test team, they have not won a series outside subcontinent ever and have failed to win a single test in Australia and India, still England made the same mistakes.Like you mentioned correctly ,England has to bat last on this pitch, so they have to look for a cushion of like 50 runs as lead.English batsman follow conventional test cricket methods ,that is they play the ball on its merit, which does not work much in subcontinent. When ball turns you have to attack because you dont know which one will turn from rough and become unplayable. If you keep defending its likely that you will make an error no matter how good your technique is.Just like the fear of swing confuse subcontinent batsman, same way fear of spin confuses English batsman ,the pitch on which match is going on, it does not have any demons , not a single ball has turned alarmingly. So if English batsman play attacking cricket they can surpass Srilankan score.KP is the main guy for England, they need a big one from him.

You are right dubey, test cricket at its best. You can well compare this to Gavaskar's single handedly rescuing India on many occasions. England are not and never had been comfortable with the turning pitches in sub continent. At best they can tackle spin on home grounds. As critics never accepted India as number one team because they can not tacle pace with swing on fast bouncy pitches so also England can not be accepted as a number one team in test cricket as they lack appropriate Technic to cope up with the spin on turning pitches. As has already been seen England have collapsed to 193 all out giving Sri Lanka vital lead of 125 runs. They will find it very difficult to save this match.

Hello friend, oh a great match. Jayawardene scored 180. And srilanka scored 318 in first innigs. After that they bowl well and manage england to only 193 runs. There after england hit back again and now srilanka is only 84 lost of 5 wickets. Surely we will see result. And a great match. Nice to meet you. Hope to see you again. Have a nice day.

He is a special player for the Sri Lankans with Sangakkara as they have been scoring in bulk for the team.It was a valued effort from him to score 168 in a match in which the second highest is 27 by chandimal and he made this score with the help from panesar and anderson as panesar dropped him twice which were a dolly and anderson dropped him off his own bowling but still he is going strong and would look to take his team beyond 300 and would also take his score beyond 200. In this match he has achieved a record of scoring 2000+ runs in two grounds as he have scored 2697 in Colombo and 2100 in galle. He is the only one to do so,and this shows how good he is at home.Tomorrow anderson and broad would be looking to clear the tail of sri lanka and allout them as quickly as possible.

You are right wakeupsud, Mahela efforts have born special significance because all other batsmen on both sides have failed as we see now that even England have slumped to 193 runs. He has indeed taken his team past 300. Thanks for the information about him crossing 2000 runs on 2 Sri Lankan grounds, Colombo and Galle.
