I was listening to Heart Essex on the radio this morning after dropping my youngest off at pre-school. Whilst I was listening Martin and Sue did the £1,000 minute. One of the questions was 'What is the colour of the Chow Chow dog's tongue?' I guessed black but they said the answer was blue. Martin and Sue both said that they didn't have any idea what the dog looked like so I decided to Google about it. I went on the link for The Kennel Club and there is a picture and description of the dog. The animal looks to me like a small version of a Husky but with a squashed face like a Pug. The description says that the tongue is bluish black!? There are two types of Chow - the Rough and the Smooth. They both have different variations of the coat and both types have a variety of colours, of which neither is limited to one colouring. It seems to be a very loyal animal and will look after its owner and home when the need arises.

I was raised next to a neighbor that had two Chows. They were very aggressive and protective over their territory, but they were good dogs for the neighbors. They were an older couple and they certainly didn't have to worry about intruders. Their tongues are certainly a unique trait. Sometimes if you see a dog that is mixed with a Chow or has a little in it somewhere along the way, their tongue will have blue spots on it.

When I was a teenager my best friend's father had a chow. I was fascinated with this dog, I'd never seen anything like it before. He was jet black and his fur was so thick and his tongue so blue! I can't remember the colour of his eyes though I wish I could. I've never been close up to a chow since, but I remember him well, it was not a familiar breed in the suburbs in those days.

My girlfriend had a chow-chow. I must say they are very beautiful and loyal animals. Strong as an ox and very obedient. When it came to our daily walks, the chow-chow (brodie) would usually lead and go where he wanted. So, training when they are young would be a must. They are perfect with young children and can ward off most animals.
