How do you deal with neighbors who steal?

Hi myLotters! My father raises free-range chickens and are about 50 of them. Last month when my dad came back from out of town he noticed that 1 of the roosters are gone. I know it sounds as if he knew all all of them but he knew exactly how many roosters he had before he left. I know it's bad but we're suspecting our neighbor, who has a bad reputation, took one of my dad's fine roosters and is still keeping it within their fence. Tonight while my dad's loading all his chickens on to the truck we heard a rooster with a similar voice that he once had. We can't really prove it and have no plans in confronting them because they'll get offended once we start asking about their chickens. It's not impossible though that they took it because they've not only done stealing once. The son's and their friends drink a lot and eat stray dog meat or chicken when their appetizers are gone. We can't help think that these neighbors are really thieves, just because nobody confronts them about it since they're known to be arrogant. I just hope they stay away once they're all drunk again.

Ohhh that is very bad and indeed very sad that you own neighbors are thieves.... Than the best way to deal such neighbors is simply avoid them and indirectly let them know that you are thieves next time you meet them ,tell them "we doubt that some of my neighbors is stealing my chickens......" .And you will promptly get the reply no no it can be some other cause that might be causing your chickens to disappear .........lol And just see the result next time they will know from inside that you too know that they are stealing your chickens .... And simply avoid them and put strong vigil on them .........that is it ....... Hare Krishna Ganesh

hi ganesh, we do avoid them and they know it. but you know together with arrogance, they're sarcastic people as well (the sons). you see the 2 sons are police officers and their whole family is like an assistant/helper of the political dynasty in our hometown so they act like no one can bother them since they've got their "big boss". their reputation is already bad as it is so i just try to be aloof around them.

I haven’t experience such situation, since I am living in a more secured environment and it’s a private village where we have a security guard and a village gate. But if I were on such situation, I would totally set up a Closed-Circuit-Television Camera (CCTV-camera) so that when they are trying to pull off a heist I will have a proof and let them be liable to their wrong actions. Putting up guard dogs also helps most especially that they are more territorial and knows how to bark thieves. You can also install a thieft and alarm trap, somehow this will help most especially when someone is stealing your property, such device will alarm and make them noticed over the community.

Hi heaytheblogger! I don't think there's a need to put up a CCTV camera. If we put such security then people might wonder and get interested in what we have in our humble abode. We don't want such attention because people will get intrigued. As for our dogs they've been doing a great job in letting us know if there are suspicious people or even sound. We have a total of 7 dogs, 4 that we keep inside the house and 3 are kept outside by our storage.

Are you certian he was stolen? Maybe he just got away. You could always get a big scary dog. Hopefully one that wont eat chickens.

hi babytaffster! the chickens always come back home for food because they're used to it. and once they're caught outside our fence then they can't come back specially if they're eaten or tied or put in a cage and own it like it's thiers. we do have large breed dogs but i can't let them loose to guard the perimeter because we're also scared that they'll get caught by some bad guys like our neighbors who jokingly say that our dogs are big and meaty, looks like good meat. anyway they've somewhat stayed away from us since we got our pibulls but our dogs chases our chicken so we keep them apart. at least having the dogs gives them the idea that we have a guard dog. :)

Since you have no proof at all, it's difficult to confront your neighbor or even file a case against them. It's not easy to have an environment where you're always worried about what could happen to you, your home, and your family. Perhaps, you could put up a higher fence so it's not easy for them to steal from you. Or, if you notice that they're having their drinking sessions again, you can have a watch night, so you can catch any bad moves they make. Then, you can report them to the authorities since you've witnessed what they've done.

Hi jureathome! Thankfully we don't raise chicken anymore so we don't need to worry anymore. It's actually my father's and he moved back to his own hometown (where we live is my mother's hometown). My sister and I have established a good reputation here so I hope no one dares to steal from us or else they'll get what they asked for. It's more of respect that we ask from them now because we have reported other incidents where people have been rude to us or has done something wrong. I don't think they'll want their names on the record for crossing us.
