I have been hearing about this on different news programs this week.
Prank calls are being made to hotel guests late at night. The caller claims to be the manager of the hotel and informs the guest that there is an emergency in the hotel. The guest is told that they need to smash out the windows of their room. They are encouraged to use the top of the toilet tank to do so.
I have heard recording of the calls. They sound very sincere and genuine.
The guests do as instructed causing hundred to thousand of dollars in damages. In one situation the damage was estimated to be $100,000. This was because a guest got a call that there was a gas leak in the hotel and asked to unscrew the water sprinkler system causing $100,000 in damages.
The callers are pranksters. In fact it is a group of pranksters. The whole thing is a hoax. This has been happening to guests of respectable hotels all over The United States. These pranksters even have a chat room and get together to discuss the pranks and how to improve them.

ow,, i think the Hotel should give more security for phone line. There have to be some people who should take care on the line phone and make call system where there will a sign if the call is from hotel officer or from out side the hotel line. So if the call is from out side the hotel and do pranks, the person who stays will know.

I believe that the pranksters used skype to make the call. There is still a lot of mystery surrounding these calls. For instance, how or why did the pranksters target the particular guest. Did they know the guests' name or was it an at random call to just a generic guest. Did the pranksters just say "hello sir or madam"?
One victimized guest has expressed his concern that he might get sued by the hotel for the damages that he caused but I am wondering if the guests can sue the hotel for personal and emotional injury afflicted on them by the pranksters.

I believe that these people get requests from ordinary people and get provided with names and details etc. My grandson wanted to call in a request to have them pretend that they were an insurance agent calling to cancel my brother's workmans Comp insurance coverage and accuse him of fraud. This would have devestated him because he frequently gets hurt at work. I could see the gears grinding in his 13 yr old brain and had to make him get off from here and stop listening to them.

It sounds a lot like an internet program called Friday Nite Cranks and that is all these people do is call around and make prank calls. My 13 yr old grandson listens to them and loves it which kind of bothers me. He has wanted to pull some of these pranks and I get after him because he could get into so much trouble if caught. I guess this show is really popular amongst the young kids. There is another one, Prank U...

I tried to comment earlier but was unable to post my response. I am just testing to see if it takes this comment. If so, I will write more later.

It took it so let's see if I can write more.
I believe that I heard of Prank U when I was searching this story and the group that is making these prank calls.
Some pranks can be funny and non-harmful. The prank calls are not funny. They are dangerous and they are harmful as well as causing a great deal of grief and actual damages.
I can see where a young person might not see the dangers of prank calls but they can be criminal in nature. And these to hotel guests are.

Unfortunately, since we are part of the computer age, and most phone systems in large hotels are controlled by a computer, some hackers can break into the system and make themselves appear to be part of the staff. It won't take the federal government too long to decide this is an organized criminal conspiracy and when encouraged by wealthy business owners, they will do their investigations across the country and over the internet. Criminal conspiracy does carry a pretty healthy penalty in felony jail time. Many youths who may be involved may find that mom and dad can't save them from this one.
What seemed like fun to some of them, won't be when the government steps in. It is sad that there are people out here in the world who have nothing better to do than be destructive. It would be nice if they took all that wasted energy and used it for something constructive. But there just seems to be too many people who are solely interested in their own entertainment no matter what the cost. Those who frequently call themselves pranksters end up being criminals and punks. Thanks for the discussion friend.

I have been wondering how the pranksters target one hotel guest and can phone that guest.
I am not certain that the pranksters are young. There is a well organized group. They have given themselves a name, something like pranksters.com and have a chat room where they discuss their pranks and ask for feedback.
I have watched a few TV reports about this group. A former FBI agent who is now an analyst for one of the TV station gave his opinions about this group. and said something similar to what you have said in your response.
This group sees what they are doing as fun but the hotel does not and neither does the poor guest who fell for the prank. Can you imagine how embarrassing and humiliating it is for the guest who has been smashing out the windows with the top of the toilet?
These pranksters are criminals. In one situation, a guest caused $100,000 damage to the hotel because of the prank call.

The group calls themselves something like pranknet.

That is insane! The hotels chain must have really angry about all these pranksters, do they reported this to the proper authority so that an investigation can be carried out to nap the group leader, criminal charges can be filed and stiff sentence can be handed out to whoever responsible for this to facilitate their next call from prison, i do hope police take prank calls like this seriously, and consider they are indeed criminal activity under the law, and DA office aggressively pursue the person responsible for the prank call. Someone could have die of heart attack or panic attack due to the sense of urgency with fear in the message. Then it will escalate into homicide case. I have not read thing about this in prints and news reporting only until now in here.

Wow! Successfully pulled off over 60 of these type of pranks within a year, that's quite an impressive achievment for the group leader. May be FBI is closing in on the group's trail and will finally nap his tail after this hotel prank, then you may have the chance to read some news about the leader later and how he manage to have the luxury to issue his order of more pranks using prison's computer. His day may have numbered after so many successful hoaxes, he probably can count on that.

It is amazing what people think is funny these days. I wonder who ends up having to pay the bill, the guest, the hotel or the insurance company. I would not think they could get the insurance to pay, since they have all kinds of loop holes to get them out of paying. If the hotel has to pay for the damage then of course their rates will go up to cover the extra expese. And how many of us as a guest in a hotel could afford to pay a $100,000 damage bill, most of us are lucky we can afford to stay in a hotel for a vacation. Just a shame, if they can catch these so called pranksters they need to figure out a way to pay these bills along with some jail time.

I have also wondered who pays the bills for the damage. That is also a real concern of at least one of the guests who was a victim of the prank. I read his story online. The police decided not to charge him but the guest felt concerned that the hotel might sue him for damage. Just the fact that the police would consider charging the victimized guest frightens me. His concern that the hotel might sue him is of concern to me also. What happens if I became victim of this group? It could really happen to anyone.

It is a scary thought that this could happen to anyone. At least you have heard about it and trying to let others know. I don't plan on traveling anytime soon, but if I need I would at least know to hang up and call the front desk to find out if this is for real or not. Thanks for the information.

Hi boston,
Next thing that comes along may be the burglars to get what they want. I should think twice before responding to such calls. The hotel management also see to it that their line is secure from prank calls, caller ID and all those things.

The hotel guest has no idea. This only began recently and only now is being reported in the news. The caller sounds very genuine. The guest believes the caller to be the manager of the hotel. Only one guest of the hotel is called. I think this has been happening all over The United States and it is only recently that investigators are putting it all together and cautioning the public. I am certain that the hotels will now put some plan in place to protect the hotel and its guests.
I think that the pranksters are only having "fun" (if that is what you want to call it). They do not plan to burglarize anyone or cause physical harm.
They are an organized group calling themselves something like pranksters.com. They have a chat room and discuss their pranks in the chat rom.
These calls might be fun for the pranksters but the hotel guest is not laughing. Nor is the hotel.

This is really bad and especially since we are living in such tough economical times. These pranksters need to get what they deserve. I hope that they get caught and that justice is done because they could end up ruining someone's business. It is hard enough for hotels as it is. Is it just the big hotels or small ones too?

I think that it is a variety of hotel. I do not know if it is just big or small ones. I am going to have to look up more stories. They are online if you want to do a search for yourself. I searched 'hotel guests get prank calls" but I think you can search pranknet. I believe that is the name of the organization. I plan to do more searching.

That just not right. I knew some youngsters love to pull such prank on businesses, and what is the fun of it. It might cause danger to some guests, if that happen, what would they got? I just don't understand they ever consider the consequence of it. Oh well, I hope the authority will catch them, and give them a spank lesson.

You assume that they are youngsters. They are not. They are grown men. The leader of the group calls himself Dex after The Showtime series, Dexter.
It did cause danger to the guests. I think humiliation and embarrassment is danger. The police get called. The guest has to explain what happened. I am certain that that when these prank calls first began, the guests were probably taken into custody. They may have even been taken to a mental institution. Some guests are fearful that they are going to be sued for the damages they caused.
Imagine that you were one of the first persons to get a prank call like this and that you were convinced to smash out expensive hotel room windows with the top of the toilet tank.

I know that there are many adjectives to describe these so called pranksters. I guess that crazy could be one but that might be too kind. People who are "crazy" usually do not have the mental abilities to pull off such a well organized scheme. And people who are "crazy" are sick. I do not believe that these pranksters are sick.

I think this pranksters is bunch of sick people. I can not wait to see them get caught and send to prison. If they act all over United State does it mean they are just one gang of prankster who moving around or there are many groups of them at different state?

It is one group and they are in Canada. They have been making these prank calls to hotels and other establishments all over The United States. The leader of the group calls himself Dex based on The Showtime series "Dexter". They are known. They are not anonymous. They have been interviewed by other sites.
They are listed in Wikipedia. Apparently they have been around some time.
