OK, dirty question! Sorry, but it keeps coming to my head. Is toilet paper recycled? Just curious...

The grey or brown toilet papers are often recycled, you can see they are made of mixed colors of paper. The softer white or pastel ones are probably not recycled but made of new paper.

I agree too. That's why I try to recycle (separate my garbage)

You are right. Recycling everything that is possible would be very useful... to save and keep the forests, before it's not too late.

Hello KOSTAS and welcome to myLot. Interesting di9scussion. Here in my country the United States the toil paper available is not recyclable. Once it is put into water it devolves and disappears so there is nothing to recycle. Te brand that I buy is made from recycle paper such as cardboard boxes, and other such paper newspapers and papers from office business. One can also buy recycled paper towels made the same way..

Well I wouldn't think it would be healthy to recycle that paper.I wouldn't want to use it for any thing.

In most communities in the US when you flush the paper down the toilet it is recycled at the sewage treatment plant. The sludge that is left is used for fertilizer in many communities.

In Greece we have to throw them away, as only in a few big cities the paper can be flushed down the toilet.

I really don't know what goes on with the toilet paper after it is flushed. I mean toilet paper and all solid human wastes are things that are biodegradable, so I would assume that it is recycled in some way. But, I really don't tend to think that the paper that is flushed down the toilet is used as a paper pulp that would be used for newspaper or for traditional recycled paper. Or, at least I certainly hope that is not the case.

Toilet paper is already made of recycled paper to begin with. So, thats why toilet paper is disposed of. And after all, why would anyone want to re-recycle toilet paper after it has been used? Not me, not anyone.

I guess paper must be heat treated before it comes out as a new product.

I wouldn't bother with toilet paper like that. I prefer toilet paper and I don't care if they recycle it or not. It biodegrades anyway.

Yuck! I shouldn't think so, but there again in Corfu you are not allowed to flush toilet paper down the toilet because the pipes are so narrow. Therefore if you need to open your bowels (sorry only polite way to say this!) the paper has to go into a bin beside the toilet. Whether this is the same in private residences I don't know but it is the case in the apartment rooms.

Does the rest of the world throw garbage in the toilet? No one in Greece throws paper in the toilet, just the stupid ones. :)

The only paper that goes down the toilet is toilet paper.

You can buy toilet paper made from recycled materials (not, presumably, from recycled USED toilet paper, however!). Eco-friendly toilet paper should have no chemical additives and will be separated and will break down naturally with the other solids at the sewage treatment plant. Many sewage treatment plants compost the solids, heat treat them (to kill bacteria) and return the result to the land as a highly effective fertilizer. Therefore, in both senses, toilet paper is (or can be) recycled. Before the widespread use of paper, people used rags and sponges which were habitually collected and washed, so toilet 'paper' has long been recycled. Sponges used for this purpose were widely used in Roman times and are very sanitary, since they can be boiled and reused many times.

You could recycle it I suppose, but I think the more sensible thing to do would be to collect it, dry it and then burn it in one of those places that I can't remember the name of in English. They burn trash, use it to heat water and send the water out so people use it for heating.

In some countries, toilet paper is flushed into the toilet after use. This goes directly to the sewers ready for bio degradation. But for some, toilet papers would clog the pipes in the toilet system. Those toilet papers are not recycled. Why? Because it is unhygienic to recycle them. Plus, they don't need recycling as they are easy to be degraded by nature's means. We only recycle those that are non-disposable and hard to be degraded by nature like bottles and plastics. Papers like news prints are recyclable but not toilet paper!

If toilet papers are unused you can recycle them but if its used, you can't recycle it anymore because body wastes are very infectious so just throw them away.

Yes, toilet paper is made form recycled paper that's why it has tiny bits of colors in it. It was made from used paper. However, used toilet papers don't get recycled anymore of course, it's too dirty to be cleaned. I don't have any idea how they clean and recycle used toilet papers so that must be impossible, it's unsanitary. I recycle papers in my own home. Used papers I can use again.

Over here a lot is recycled made of paper but also clothes (make paper out of it too). Even diapers (pampers etc) are recycled. So this should mean you can do it with toiletpaper as well. But I don't think they do so. Toilet paper is a kind of paper that is made differently and flushed so it will vanish in an other way. But what you can do is not using toilet paper at all, use water, that way you will safe the spoiled paper.
