Serving a recipe you've never cooked before

I like cooking and I like trying out new recipes all the time. When we have special occasions to celebrate, I want to serve something new. But sometimes I get scared to cook the new recipe then serve it on the party immediately. I want to try making it first maybe a few weeks before the party so that I'm sure that I'm serving something good. Are you the same way?

I like to try it before I make it for guests, although I know it will not be exactly the same. I don´t write down recipes and I usually follow my insticts when I am cooking.

I like diversity and I try to learn new ways of cooking and new aditions to old recipes. But I´m not very much interested in sweets as I did not make any for years because my husband had diabetes.

You are a true foodie then. I'm not much into sweets either. We have a history of diabetes in the family too so it's good that I've lost my sweet tooth. I prefer spicy, salty and sour flavors now. Just hope I don't get high blood pressure as we have a history of that too. Haha! Thanks for your responses! Happy eating....and cooking!

You're probably very good at cooking to have very reliable instincts in cooking. What's your favorite dish to cook or your specialty?

What I did is to cook it before the party, not only several weeks but several times especially to new recipes. This will give me time to make necessary adjustments on the taste and others. However, I am still a litle bit nervous on the outcome on the actual party or occassion. Even if you had almost perfected the dish, you cannot still please others. You need to get feedbacks on what you did.

Well that's true. Not everyone will like everything we serve. But I'll take it when most of the guests would like it.

Yeah, as long as there are many guests that like the food you served, it will be a great compliment to you.

I feel the same way too. But most of all I will make sure I have all their ingredients. I will not try the recipes if I don't have enough ingredients. Once I have them, I will make a first try. If its good I will serve it to others. Otherwise it will be just me who will finish it.(^^)

hello, yes i think that's the way to do it, test it out at home first and do the modifications, yeah there's another catch, cooking in small amounts could sometimes be different than when actually cooking in large cauldrons, pots or woks to be served for a larger amount of people so give it a plus minus allowance. good luck

You're right. It's different when you have to cook twice or more than the original recipe. It's better if you know how the food tastes, looks and even smells like already so that you can make appropriate adjustments to handle larger amounts. Hey thanks for your response!

When I saw some recipes that make me interested I always try first because I don't know how it looks and how it tasted..If good I must be proud at myself and like to show to all my family and friends to tasted it and if not i just hide it inside..maybe I will try again another times.:)

So true! If it turns out to be a "fail", it's best not to let anyone else know it, or in this case taste it. Then at least we already know that it's not worth cooking again.
