What did Jesus mean when He said, "Do not cast your pearls before swine?

The entire scripture reads: "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you." As simply as I can put it, if you "cast your pearls" - that is, try to give spiritual understanding of a thing to those who are set against it and God, they could "trample them underfoot" - make the wisdom of the Cross to be foolish or tear the wisdom apart with their own "wisdom," and then they could "turn again and rend you" - by that, it means that they may become personal in their assault on the wisdom and understanding you have tried to share. This happens all too often. Sharing the gospel is good, but it's not always best to share it with everyone all the time. We must be led by the Spirit and know which ones are "swine" and which ones will hear what we have to say.

Very well put! Sadly, it can be a colossal waste of time to try and share the gospel with some people -- that is to say, with a "natural" person who, as Scripture puts it, "does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned." (1 Corinthians 2:14). Someone once said -- rather indelicately -- that we must avoid witnessing to "dogs" and "hogs." If one is hostile to the gospel, we need to shake the dust off our feet and move on to someone who is seeking after the truth.

If you do not have the truth, it does not matter if you are selective on who hears it. God places truth all around us. I am happy to speak it to all God's children even the hogs and dogs of the world. Is it better for hogs and dogs to hear no truth at all??? Surely not. Sure, people don't always listen, however when real truth is heard, it hangs with you until at some point you might be ready to listen. I happily move that grain of sand. In time, mountains do move even for the hogs and dogs of this world. Is it right to give up on any of God's children?? I think not. The Real God won't do it. We shouldn't either. Doesn't it speak to who we are?? Doesn't it speak to Who God really is??
