Giving something as a bait, will this a good business strategy?

I had noticed that, so many websites, or beauty products giving something for free at the beginning, as bait of course, and if the customers like it, they will pay for the full package of it. As the same strategy apply to many Apple games on their Ipad device. They let you download the free version of the game, and when you get addicted to it, you might pay extra more on the full version of the game. Freemium as many people has called this strategy. Will this also work on you too?

That's what they called the marketing strategy to buy their products, it is like a test for them if the application is hot in the consumers. I have tried to download some application but I never tried to buy the full version I just thought someday if the game is not popular it will soon be free even it is the full version.
