Greetings horror games fans,
I'd like to share my thoughts about one of the best games I played in the last 2-3 years. Amnesia:The Dark Descent. Even by seeing the trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M627-obxNzg) it already gets you a little creped out though the main thing is a lot better.
Now why do I think that Amnesia TDD is a really good horror game? First of all when it comes to horror game the main aspect for me was always the game's atmosphere. Atmospheres like the ones in amnesia, silent hill or even in some of the first Resident Evils, always caught my attention cause in games like these the creators tend to create not only fear (which always passes after some time as soon as you start to master the game) but the magic ingredient of desperation. Desperation that happens when it seems as the game has the upper hand on beating you than you beating easily the game. I found that in Amnesia too, from the first little spooky things combined with some nice ambient music, till your first enemy encounters combined with some heartbreaking music. It gets you the feeling that you won't have an easy time here. The concept of not having any weapons (which was also introduced by Frictional games in the "Penumbra: Black Plague") adds some extra desperation to your enemy encounters since the only thing left to do is running and hiding. In addition to all the above your character has not only a health status but a sanity status which tend to get lower when you encounter enemies or unexplained occasions or when you stay too long in the dark. Whenever your sanity level gets lower your players vision gets blurry like when you are dizzy, walking becomes a little unstable and if it gets too low it results on having your character fade out and hearing a beeping sound.
Now about the story...
The story begins in an place like a castle in the Middle Ages with your main character, Daniel, waking from something like a sleep and as progressing you can easily understand that Daniel is in a short of amnesia state. From the start till a very progressed stage of the game Daniel seems to be a victim in a crazy world that his opponent Alexander (which is also his goal from the start to stop him and kill him) created. As you progress you find out that Daniel isn't as innocent as it seems in the start but more than that he seems to be one of the bad guys after all. I think that I spoiled too much about the game. If you haven't try it horror game fans I'm proposing you to give it a try. If you already played it I'd like you to share your thoughts about this game. What did you like the most? Which was the freakiest/scariest scene of the game in your opinion? Are you up for a new Amnesia game? (I AAAAM!! :))

I am not a fan of first person games but amnesia became an exception for me cos its a real survival horror game in an age where the great survival horror franchise turned into a generic action shooter that is not scary but Amnesia is indeed a very scary game. what amazes me is that when the Major companies who use to make horror games said they go to the action direction cos "its not marketable"
Heck Amnesia is an Indie game created by Indie developers and it became a huge hit. The athmosphere of the game, The freaking castle just make everythign works. Also I love the fact that the main character is not some supercop who kung-fu fights the monsters (look at the mess Resident evil turned into)
Amnesia is like a first person version of the Clocktower games and Haunting ground. I love that the character have no weapons, The hide and run type of horror games were usually used for female characters but it is amazing how it worked for Daniel, showing male characters can be vulnerable and scared too.

I totally agree. I mean even Silent hill turned into an "actiony" game, what the heck? I guess Frictional games are the only ones that respect us, horror gamers :(
Who were your favorites ones? Mine were the blind ones, everytime I run onto them I crouched, turned the other way and then I begun walking sloooowly :P hahaha
Frictional Games have The Penumbra Series too. Have you tried them?
Also first person adventure horror games.
Especially the second one (Black Plague) is very "amnesiac", no weapons there too ;) thought the story there takes part in an underground base in the North Pole. (Don't they REALY know how to pick a creepy place so far? ;) hehe)
The good thing about Frictional games is that in Penumbra series there were two parts, #1 Overture and #2 Black Plague so that kind of makes think that there might be a second Amnesia. Hm.. Maybe we could get to see the Agrippa's story or Alexander's for example :)

when you say the blind ones are you talking about the brute? those creatures have no eyes. My have enemy in Amnesia is the Kaernk cos that assailant is invisible. Have you played Amnesia's Expansion? Amnesia Justine, On that game you will control a woman but you wont feelthe difference anyway LOL cos its first person. I havent played the Penumbra series but I might consider it after the good experience with Amnesia. I love it's puzzles, it reminds me of old Resident evil games.

Yeap I didn't really know their names, those and the water monsters (those were Kaernk right?) were amazingly creepy, ok the first water monster encounter was terrorizing but whenever I run into those blind ones I was really creeped out :P I have played the expansion (not through the end though) I also tried some custom maps which some of them were really amazing, like "Mea Culpa"
You can find them here, there are a looooooooooooooot
