New Curriculum in the Philippines puts 4 year old kids at K1 level

My daughter is turning 4 this June, so we wanted to enroll her for Nursery level this coming school year. However, after their assessment, she was listed under the Kindergarten 1 block. On top of that, they advised us to enroll her for a summer class for either Writing or Pre-Reading. Although, all these are good for her to learn at an early age, but we're worried that she may get burned out. We were not exactly expecting that she'd have serious studying on her first year at school. Now, we're debating whether to go for the summer class to speed her up for K1, or insist to have her placed in the Nursery level and if she catches up fast, she can always be accelerated for the next school year. I wonder what the best step to take would be.

Hello jureathome, I would like to comment on the new curriculum here in the Philippines about the K+12 program. I am a teacher in a university and I am not in favor of this K+12 program. In my graduate school class where all my students are high school math teachers they said that what is needed are additional classrooms, additional teachers, and a reduced class size around 30 to 45 students only per class not 60! I hope your daughter wont be burned out... Just guide her through... Good luck!

You know you're right about that, and I've heard people comment negatively about the program. I just hope the government has plans to follow and support this new set up. Otherwise, illiteracy will just spike up due to inability of parents to send their kids to school. With the advent of call center industry in the country, more undergrads will opt to apply for a job when they're in the right age and start earning, instead of waiting for graduation.

I'm more concern about the new curriculum im which there will be additional years for High Schools; so by the time your daughter will be graduating High School she will be 21 years old by then. Not much time to work or to attend College though. Now that's a burn out!
