What do you do to help your dog move from one house to another?

I have two dogs Lucky (a Lab/Shepherd) and Dallas (a mutt) that I am moving from Kentucky to New Jersey with. The last time I moved with them it was only a 10 minute drive and Dallas handled it fine but Lucky was a mess. This time I am driving 13+ hours and I don't really know how to help him not only with the car ride but once I am in the new house. Last time he wouldn't sit still for more than a few minutes at a time and vomited several times and was just a mess. When I have taken him to the Vet in the car he has also gotten car sick. I have been considering having them transported by a dog transporter (I was thinking maybe being in a crate might help-my car is too small for him to ride in his crate). I was also thinking if he did get sick they'd be better equipped to handle it. (I am moving as an emergency type move and I have to shove as much in my car as possible so him vomiting on something could possibly ruin something like a computer or tv.) I plan to hold off on food and possibly Ace them to make them more relaxed but does anyone have any other suggestions?

it is a good ideea to restrict the food for a few hours before the trip. the water should not be restricted and actually be sure taht you ive them water on the way because 13 hours is a lot.i don't know how the weather is there so if is hot teh water is essential. talk to you vet and he may give them some antivomitive medication before the trip which will help a lot. i don't recommend sedating them on the way because if they fell like vomiting they can suffocate. if he has a favourite toy you can leave it with him in the car so he will feel more like home. at you new house make sure they know where the food and water are situated because it is essential. step by step they will meet the new enviroment and thay will accept it.

I kept the food away and let them have water on the way and stopped several times so they could get out and move around. They did well.

Hello Flird853, I see you already know what to do: restricting food for a few hours before departure time, crating the dogs for the time of the ride. You should also try to exercise them a bit more before leaving. I think that a tired dog will rather sleep most of the time. If you can make a half an hour stop in your way, in a place where you can exercise them some more, will also help. I suggest you to call the vet and ask her if there are any pills that you could give to your dogs to be more relaxed during the 13 hours ride.
