Stick to one type only...

I know a friend who only eats certain ethnic food from where he grew up. His habit seems rather strange to me as he has no interest at all to even try other ethnic food. I am somewhat the opposite, I'd try anything new to me and might even end up liking something that I'm not familiar to begin with. And I can understand when people avoid certain type of food for many different reasons; but I'd think they would still be reasonably willing to try something outside their own ethnic food. That friend must have had a really traumatic experience with unfamiliar food or something...

He's missin out so much in his life. Maybe it's their tradition to not eat the food of other culture? Maybe he's not allowed to eat anything other than their ethnic food.

Don't worry about him anymore. It'll be his own problem.

It's just him. Everyone else in his family and friends are open to try different types of food. He'd go along with them to different places, but he'd keep eating at basic minimum if he can't find anything similar to the types of food he's used to.

I've met many people like that. It's not usually a bad experience, but rather a lack of wanting to try new things. Those types of people generally don't try new styles, places and idea. They find one thing that works and stick to it for their intier life. Boring if you ask me, but boring is safe.

My mother-in-law is like that. She only eats one type of food and is scared to try others. She hates vegetables and would never ever try even just a single bite. I used to be like that when i was young until i went to my University, stayed in a dormitory and saw people eating different types of food. That enticed me and i started trying it. I'm more adventurous now when it comes to food and i'm not scared of trying certain types from different countries. In fact i like going to different types of restaurants in our city.

I was also exposed to different types of food than what I usually had at home since a young age when I was on my own at 17. That's probably have something to do with how I become more acceptance of new things later in my life. Doesn't matter whether I end up liking it or not, at least I am open to give it a try...

Hello sishy7, Im not a picky eater so I too love to try other ethnic food and lucky I dont have problem to eat other ethnic food, I love japanese cuisine, chinese food, etc. But I have not try the arabian menu, I heard their cuisine are spicy and I love hot spicy food other food that I would love to try is mexican menu. Maybe because we are used to live in different place who has different type of food so we dont have problem to eat any other ethnic food. I wonder what would your friend do if he is transfered to other country or travelling to the country where its hard to find his own ethnic food? What if he is invited to have dinner with people from different ethnic? would he turn down the invitation or would he try it? Or perhaps he has tried those food but he didnt like the taste so he doesnt want to try it again. Thats so strange, and I hope he is not the kind of the person who praise his own ethnic too much and disregarding other people ethnic and even the culture because I know some people who are fanatics to their own ethnic and love to bash other.

Hi there, You see, he's from your country and I found out about his rather strange habit when he visited here. I thought I'd take him to eat out at a place that he wouldn't find back home, instead he insisted to go to an Indonesian restaurant when he learned there were many of them here... Later he told me that he's so happy to find his kind of food here since he never fancy to try any other food. If he happens to be some place where it's not available, he won't eat out and he'll just make himself some fried rice or something simple like steam rice with fried egg or even just cup noodles. Same goes when he's invited to dinner, he'll just have basic food available (bread rolls, for instance) and usually have his own dinner at home before of after if he could not find his kind of food at other places...

Oh sishy7 I'm feeling sad for your friend.I have met similar people who won't even drink a glass of water from outside. And by the way sishy7,same pinch.I am just like you.I will try any vegetarian food I can get.I like trying new dishes.Spicy foods are my favourite. I want to travel all over India and try all new flavours and foods that I will get. Especially I want to go to New Delhi to try the famous varieties of street foods there!!!

Yeah, I suppose it's his lost for sticking to be the way he is... But I see that it's not a problem for him and he's happy in general so I just let it be and just try to compromise our preferences when he's around at meal times... And btw, what you're wanting to do there sounds very interesting
