Do they play music everywhere you go/are these days?

I was wondering if there is anywhere you can go these days where they do not play music?? I went to the supermarket this morning and there was music being played, went to the dentist and there was music playing in the waiting room and dentist room ... I know this can be relaxing these days, unlike the deadly silent there was when I was a child! Went to the swimming pool and there was music playing as well!!! And then went to the shopping centre and all the shops were playing music but different music in every shop and trying to outdo each other with the volumne!! Are we turning into a socity that is scared of silence? What are your views on this? Do you think everywhere you go there is music playing? Now I do really love music and it can be a good thing sometimes as you get ot listen to different music that you may not normally listen to and listen to different radio stations as well. but it seems it is everywhere no peace and quite anywhere

i do listen to the news in the morning and at work, we generally have an online radio station on but when i get home, the house is quiet (until my daughters get home and the tv gets turned on!) i like the quietness.

It is nice to be quite, I think the world is forgetting what is to be quite

The only thing that bugs me about music being played absolutely everywhere is that I don't even realise it seeping in and half an hour later I'm singing a song and I've no idea where I heard it to get it stuck in my head. I've often walked out of the grocery store, got in the car, started driving and started singing, only to wonder where on earth I last heard it because I can still hear it in my head and I can usually trace it back to a shop. Not much to complain about really lol. I'm a music lover, so for me, I don't see it as a bad thing. I have on occasion walked into a clothes store blaring music so loudly, trying to be 'hip' that I've walked out... That's a little much.

I don't even think about background music anymore, unless it's annoying. The other day I was in a taxi, and I was trying to tell the driver that she NEEDED to turn it down, because it was painful to me. The pounding, the guitars, the noise. I don't mind easy-listening background music, but that was way too much!

How are you meant to tell the taxi man where you want to go if he can't hear you? I agree sometimes the music can be very annoying

Basically. But I can understand it, music is relaxing and the silence is a little weird and/or boring. I always need music in the background of whatever I'm doing. Especially working in a place with florescent lights, I feel like the buzzing of them is maddening. Or when you can HEAR the white noise on a TV. It is kind of scary. I guess I am thankful for any kind of distraction from silence, unless it's during sleep. . Good discussion!

Yes, they do1 I have noticed this recently as well. Everywhere you go it seems to be pumping out of somewhere invisible. You can never see where it is coming from, it is just there! I just spent a few days at a ski resort and every lodge, lift and building seemed to have music coming out from it. I worked at this resort in the 90's and I do not remember it being so musical back then!

Hahahaha...I agree with you Anne18, and it seems that the only place where I dont hear music as background is when Im in my college. I like music being played as background specially when Im in spa room, it is nice to hear the relaxation music and I ever heard that music can be a theraphy for us, it is called as music theraphy but not all kind of music can be a music therapy for us. I like music, but there is a time when I dont want to listen to music because I want to stay focus on what Im doing, for example when Im doing my assignment or exam..that is why Im glad that they dont play music in the class. The right music can boast our mood, but there is a kind of music which can make us feel emotional and we cant decide what kind of music that is played in mall, dentist waiting room, etc so I always bring my Ipod and turn it on when I think that the music in the waiting room doesnt suit my taste of music. I like traditional music, I like oldies song and to tell the truth I hate the new generation of music even this kind of music is my own generation . But most of the music that played in mall or waiting room are the new generation music, so my ipod is my savior.

It does seem that some people cannot stand silence. They have to be talking all of the time, and if they aren't, the radio or TV has to be on. My supermarket does not play music, at least not yet. My dentist plays music in the actual dentist office, but not in the waiting room. It doesn't bother me too much. The elevator music is what annoys me the most.

Scared of silence is a good term for it, and I think the same as you do about this. I like to listen to my own music but I don't want to have to listen to everyone else's all of the time.

Your right..there is noise..music..tv..something..most everywhere we go these days. Music is the biggest and it does make you wonder what it is that has made people think there has to be something playing in the background all the time.

I read or heard from a Christian literature some time in the past that the devil is very cunning. That he makes sure that we are always pre-occupied with something, even with music in everything we do. Even little task like driving in our car, or waiting for something, or riding an elevator, there is always some music playing. So that we wouldn't spend the time thinking or praying. Now I enjoy music here and there, but I think that it's funny and very clever of the devil if he is behind this!

Every once in awhile a good song comes on when I'm in a store and that's ok...but the vast majority of the time it is noisy enough with all the people talking, cash registers pinging, kids whining, babies crying, etc, and there is absolutely no need for more cacophony on top of it all. Music is wonderful when you can actually listen to it, but when you are trying to do something else, or there is so much noise that you can't really hear the music and it just becomes even more noise, it's usually annoying.

I have noticed that to, that normally everywhere you go they are playing music. Whether it be a doctor's or dentist office, restaurant, supermarket, even the other day I went inside an elevator while going to the doctor's office and they had music there as well. I personally don't mind the music, but sometimes it does tend to get annoying, especially when it's something I am not in particualarly in the mood for. Like for example that same day, after listening to the music in the doctor's office for so long on my drive back home I didn't even bother turning on the radio I just wanted some peace and quite. Don't take me wrong the music was loud or anything like that is just the music they were playing I wasn't in the mood for and it give me a headache. It's just me, I am just crazy that way. LOL

They say music is good for the soul. I have noticed the same thing especially in places very weird to find music, like in a hospital. I have walked into different medical institutions today and they all have music playing somewhere in the background. Sometimes music can be felt as noise but in many times we would rather listen to music than the silence itself.

It does seem everywhere. Probably why I don't listen to any at home. Heck, my computer's sound isn't working properly and I don't miss it!

Most places I go have music, but the small corner stores don't. I get a kick out of our Price Chopper near the border. They often play dance music. I'm usually the only one dancing in the aisle, but I've caught other people as I round the corner. It's funny because I live in the only area in the North Country where you need a permit to have dancing antywhere but your home.

Music or muzak drives me mad. As I get older I am increasingly intolerant of it. When we go to pubs and restaurants I look for the quietest spot and if he place is very low on customers have been known to ask them to turn it off. We should start to vote with our wallets. Walk out if there's music. It is not relaxing to me - just an interminable rumble that makes me want to leave sooner. I also think that it shows a lack of courtesy. If I want music I'll go to a club or a disco. When I go out for a drink or meal I just want it to be my partner/family/friends and me talking without having to suffer someone else's taste in music.

I don`t think we are heading where you said: " to be scared of silence". It`s just that today music has evolved so much along with technology, so if you have the option to play music somewhere why not do it ? There is a type of music for every human state including sleep as well along with anger, dizziness and so on. Studies showed that music stimulates the unconscious boosting the overall thinking capacity, of course everyone`s tastes are different and require proper sounds to make that someone to feel in their "element". In my case, the only situation I can`t stand music is when I go to sleep, excepting this music don`t bother me.

Hi anne! You are very observant! I just realized that upon reading your discussion. Well,I guess there's still one place that doesn't play music and those are libraries, lol! I think the reason for that is,it's better to hear music than the murmurs or voices of the crowd. There's this grocery store near our house which plays songs of praise and that is really pleasant to the ears! Sometimes music makes our shopping enjoyable.
