Cell Phones and middle school

I am currently a substitute teacher. I tend to stay at the Middle school level. I feel that I have a good connection with the students and most of them think I am fair. I do have those that do not like me but it is only because I make them be responsible for their actions. My number one pet peeve in the classroom is cell phones. I cannot believe how many parents think it is ok to text their kids while they are in class. Our school policy states that if it is on and the student uses it, it is to be picked up, and the parent will be called and have to pay 15 dollars to get it back. I think this is more than fair due to the fact according to our state governing board the cells are not allowed in class period. I am in the process of getting my degree in education to teach this age group and have known that my first class room will be no cells and I will strictly adhere to the policy. I know some teachers think it is a losing battle. I do not believe however that students can learn what you are teaching if they are playing angry birds, or Facebook while you are lecturing. How do you handle the cell phone issue in your classroom?

A strict teacher make anything which he needs. Most of the children will me much worried about a very strict teachers. So the children or the kids are much worried to use them in the class. implementing or giving strict warnings about the usage of the cell phones before the class time hours can make the kids to not use them.

Cell phones should not be allowed in any educational institution as it is a disturbing element in the process of learning. Our institute is a high school and students are not allowed to use cell phones. If a student is caught with it then it is withheld. As every institute has the facility of phone thus I think there is no need to allow student to use cell phones.

that rule could be changing. our high school allows the kids to use their phone at the teachers discretion. :) in the meantime, keep doing what you're doing.

As a teacher myself it has been an up hill battle stopping students from chating while teaching is going on ,all we do is to make sure they have it switched off because if it rings while class is going on i will send them out of the class for the duration of the lesson
