This is a picture of the oldest tree in a really small park next to the marina. As you can see there is an iron rail around it with ground built up to protect this piece of history. This park is on the Bay of Panama City, Florida. This oak tree is described as following: The Old Sentry This Heritage Oak Tree is estimate to be over 250 years old. It was standing during the War Between the States. As if a Sentry standing guard over Old St Andrews Bay. Hope you enjoy the picture and learning a bit of history trivia.

Magnificent tree. I love the shapes the branches make, but what is that stuff hanging from them? (If this posts twice, blame myLot... when I hit "post response" the first time, my response disappeared.)

I thought that might be it. Microwaved moss... sure... wonder what it tastes like?

Spanish Moss on Old tree - I took this picture at Croad Vineyard in Paso Robles in an old oak forest behind the vineyard and tasting room.
I suppose I could try it if I get bored. Almost every old tree in my area is full of Spanish moss.

They must have gotten pretty close for you to be able to tell she was female. Or was it because she was "talking" so much.

Yes it is. if you notice the railing around the tree the squirrels are actually jumping over to this tree now making their way down the trunk and will sit about 3 feet away from me on the concrete through the rails. I sat there Saturday for about 2 hours after doing the farmers market. There was a cat in the little park. I tried to pet her but she finally left the park got a feeling she belongs to the condos next door. But I did not see my squirrels anywhere. So I am thinking the cat is scaring them to stay in the trees. Finally about 30 minutes before I left the park, my little female squirrel come up and was so pleased I had put her peanuts out. She sat there and listened to me talk to her and actually barked back at me. she must have young as she looks like she is nursing LOL But under this 250 yr old tree I sit with my squirrel friends LOL

What a beautiful old tree! I love oaks, even when they are dropping their nasty pollen on my car! Austin has a lovely old oak, well, it used to be lovely, until the jerk tried to kill it "for love"... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_Oak_(Austin,_Texas)

I am amazed at the variety, shapes, and sizes of some of the oaks we have here. I wish I knew their ages. Some have very wide trunks. I love photographing the many odd shapes they have become. I'm sure these trees would all have a lot of stories to tell, could they speak our language.

I am just amazed that this tree has survived all the hurricanes through that many years. It is only about 10feet of waters edge in the bay. there is a park bench under both sides of the tree I always sit on the same bench I am getting squirrel friends to become a little tame and come eat their peanuts from me LOL Glad you enjoyed the picture.

If only old trees could speak, as you say, they would have a story to tell. There was one such old tree, just a gutted out hulk really, that used to be in Greenwich Park, South East London. The story went that Queen Elizabeth used to meet a lover secretly under that tree. Elizabeth was born on the estate of which Greenwich Park is just a remnant now, so there could be a grain of truth in that story.
