Watch is a status symbol for men

Recently, my husband has been talking about his colleagues being so particular about their watches' brand. Apparently, wristwatches are a known status symbol for men who can afford them. They never miss to talk about their new watches and how much these costs during dinner meetings. Well, my husband is a very simple person and he's not even fond of watches. He finds himself in an awkward situation when one of them suddenly asks him what brand he has and where he bought it. He only had on a watch he bought for $30 on his last trip to the US. Well, he was honest about it and smoothly made a joke about the whole watch thing. Do your husbands, or any male member in the family regard watches the same way?

I think it depends on location. Now, I'm still kind of young, but my impression is that watches don't play a big role when it comes to status symbols. At least where I live. Instead, I think that wardrobe choices and in particular clothing brands play an important role in determining a man's "status" in our modern society.

Probably. These guys I'm referring to are Americans and executives of big companies in the United States.

Thankfully the men in my family does not feel the watch as a status symbol for them. I would say cars are more a status symbol than watches for men, in my circle. Maybe even salaries than watches. Except for very expensive luxury brands (Rolex, Omega etc) -- watches are generally less expensive than cars.

I agree with you ricebird. At least where I live, watches don't seem to be as big a status symbol as cars do.

Men, particularly, have limited choice in jewelry or any Democratic piece in their wardrobe. Since they require less decoration in the eyes of society, they invest in more practical and useful accessions like watches. If they are a constant in the business, cufflinks are also somewhat regarded as an essential. The male sin my family aren't watch obsessed but I do think they consider it a staple. Aside from watches, they invest on cologne since they think it will make them look (perhaps smell is a better word) approachable and fresh.

That's a really good point. I didn't see it that way. Watches would be the most they can display on their bodies and among other accessories for men, watches can cost a fortune. Unlike, women, we can flaunt our designer bags, expensive jewelries and shoes.
