I'm not sure how this happened - other than I was not paying attention. My son got me a kindle a couple years ago for Christmas and I mostly read the free books. They're usually pretty good, some are REALLY good, and some are horrible. Every now and then, I will purchase a book, but mostly I go with the free ones. And sometimes I don't pay attention to everything and end up downloading a middle book of a series. Then when I found out I have to pay for the other books, I don't usually get them because I don't know if they are going to be any good. And I don't want to read the free book because if it's in the middle of a series I'm probably going to be totally lost. So, I finished reading this one book - VERY good book! I figured I'd go look up some other books by the same author and see if anything else was free or really cheap. And I found out that the book I just finished was the 4th book of a series! I didn't even know it. This book was written pretty good and worked very well as a stand-alone book. Fortunately for me, the first 2 books of the series were also free, so I snagged them up right away. The 3rd book is $.99 so I didn't get it yet. I'm thinking maybe by the time I finish the first 2 books, the 3rd one might be free? If not, I'll spend the $.99 and get it. I am really into the first book and it does explain a few minor things in the book that I read, but it's good as a stand-alone book too! What series of books have you started in the middle and what have your experiences been?

i started in the middle of chelsea caan's heart books. but usually when you do they bring you up to the background pretty good with previous things. i think it was Heartsick i started with then found out there was Sweetheart before that. and another Evil at heart, after. what series are you reading? i like mystery thriller types like chelsea caan writes.

This one is a little sci-fi, which I don't read a lot of but do like. It's the Shadows of Justice series by Regan Black. VERY good stories!

Ha ha, that really stinks. I have done that before with some books - read the 2nd or 3rd books first, but I usually ended up being very confused with the characters and references to previous parts of the plot. You will defiintely have to read the first ones!

Since I really liked the book I read first, I'm definitely going to read the rest of the, as well as some of the other books by this author. I like her style of writing and the way she puts her characters together. I was very lucky that the books can be read by themselves and make sense.

I did read one book back then and found out that it was a part of a whole bunch of series. It was written by Paul Levine and I think the character's name is Jake/Jack Lassiter, not really sure about the name. Anyway, it was one of the books that are pretty much stand alone but it was sort of one of the many series about the main character. I didn't mind reading it since it was pretty good. There were a few references in the book that were a little bit unfamiliar but they were negligible. As I went on, I was still able to understand the attitude of the protagonist and why he is the way he is. There was also this one time, where I skipped one of the books in the Princess Diaries series and got a little bit lost, but still I enjoyed the book. It was just one book and before proceeding to the next book, I went back one step to finish the one that I skipped. By the way, which book were you referring to in this post?

It's the Shadows of Justice series by Regan Black. I read Tracking Shadows first, and am now almost done with Justice Incarnate. I have read some books have the same character, like the Alex Cross stories, that are ok to read out of order, although sometimes there are references to a past book that I hadn't read yet that kinda spoils the mystery for me when I do read it. Then there's the Mayfiar witches series which you have to read in order or you are totally lost!
