Dear myLotters, Currently I'm working in Penang, Malaysia. Here, people speaks several languages and dialects. In my working place, I sharing a cubicle with two indians. I constantly notice that when both of them talk, they tend to speak tamil in loud. I don't know why but when they're speaking, I feel quite uncomfortable. I also sense that they look me in a way of contempt. Well, I don't understand tamil and I can't understand what they are talking about most of the time, yet, I do feel that they are talking about me. No offence to anyone here but I just want to share my feelings.

How thoughtful sharmianton! Yeah Lucas, it is the only way to be certain what they are talking about. So your mind will be at ease also. In the office a quiet stare can cause you uneasiness, what more if they are talking in a loud voice in a language that you cannot understand.

Often when you do not speak other languages, and you are in a group and cannot understand we do feel left out, But they are probably not talking about you although it sometimes feel like that. I used to work in a place, where most of the work force were polish I did not understand a word they spoke and often they all sat there having conversations to each other in polish, and leave me out although most of them could speak English. I was bothered at first but then I kind of let them get on with it. IT is just easier for them to speak their national language rather than trying to speak a different one unless they had to. Often a lot of hand signals work wonders even in jokes...lol Try and have a chat with them even if they don't understand you to well, then they get used to your accent and language. Next you will be sharing lunch and talking about sports :0)
