So here's this cute Chinese girl from my son's swimming class who told the instructor that she finds my son handsome. My son thought that girl, named Sandy, has a crush on Jiro and not him until the instructor revealed to him the truth.
My son isn't interested in her since he has his own crush. We teased him to Sandy and he told us, I don't know who her parents are, I don't know where she goes to school so please i don't like her!
I was surprised! My son's preference for a girl is that he should know who the parents are! Which means family background matters to him? I never thought like that when i was 8! All that matters to me when i was 8 in having crushes was the physical appearance!
He didn't even mind that Sandy is prettier than his crush, Joey! Does this mean my son is more mature in choosing whom he would date later on in life?

Could be but knowing my son he doesn't make excuses. In fact he told us to stop teasing him because he doesn't like Sandy.

I don't think so. What I see here is your son already has a crush on someone, and though this girl is prettier than her crush, it doesn't make any difference. I remember when I had crushes.
I didn't really care if he's not the most handsome. What I knew was that my day wouldn't be complete without seeing him.
I think that "don't know who her parents are and don't know where she goes to school" are his ways of saying that you should stop teasing him because he already has his special someone.

Could be, but then again it shows that it matters to him or else he wouldn't say that. My son is a little bit matured compared to kids his age. That's why he gets along well with teenagers. He even discusses things to his swimming instructor and they talk like two adults. He doesn't like playing much with kids his age. He prefers someone older.

Aaaawww...that is so innocently cute!
And yes, how very mature of your son. That simply means he is absorbing all the values-formation lessons that are being given to him in school by his teachers, and, yes, at home by you, his own set of parents via the books and other published materials you let him read and the shows and movies you let him watch. Good job mommy!

Wow, I didn't think about those too when I was 8.
Ans yes crushing when we were kids is just normal
but we were just all about physical appearances
and not family backgrounds. So surprising.

I think he's starting to like Sandy now because he likes spending time in the pool with her. But he told me that he only likes her as a friend and he still doesn't see her as pretty as Joey!

All you can do is hope he stays that way when he grows up. :)

I could hope or i could do something about it. I believe that parents play a great role in the child's choices in life.

And just like you Toni, when i was a teener, i would have a crush basing on good looks.
