Should I sell my laptop to buy an IPad?

For about two weeks now, I've been trying to decide whether I should sell my 6months old laptop so I could buy an IPad. I'm not very familiar with how efficient an IPad could be and how it compares to a laptop, but the only reason Im considering it is its smaller and easier to bring with me if Im out of the house.
I would only use it for surfing, email, a little downloading, and myLotting.
Do you have any suggestions?
This is an HP G42 Notebook PC, i5 processor, 2GB internal memory..

I have a tablet, about 7 laptops (Linux, OS-X and Windows to version 8) and 4 desktops, and I can tell you with certainty a tablet is not in any way equal to a laptop. I have a tablet with a full-sized USB and SD card slot a dual-core processor and 16GB onboard storage, but it still cannot compare to what my 4 year old laptop running Windows 8 Consumer Preview can do. Now if you were talking the difference between a tablet and a true netbook, maybe, but one cannot replace the other. A tablet has specific tasks that it excels at, but so does a laptop. Also unless they changed it with the new Ipad, you have to have a computer to tether the Ipad to, except for the iCloud services.

Well, coming from someone who lives with his gadgets, I'd take your advice for that. Thanks.

I would suggest that NO don't sell it because you want to buy an IPad. I have my new galaxy tab but most of the time I'm still using my laptop. Tablets are good for browsing and even games. I'm using it for mylot too but If you have a bluetooth keyboard to connect in your tab more better. Sometimes tab crash if you open to many application at the same time. So if you like using it like a laptop don't think it because it is not a laptop. It is like a big mobile.

Oh, that just did it. You guys are very helpful. You and the rest of the people who responded to this discussion really addressed the concerns I have, and made me realized that the laptop is really what's suited for me.
Thanks, lynboobsy and everyone else, too.

You think so? Smaller gadgets can be more complicated?
I was actually wondering about the battery life an iPad. I have an Android before but I have to recharge it every now and then.

If I were you, I would not sell my laptop to buy an iPad. Probably I prefer to spend extra money to buy an iPad if I like it so much. A laptop is more like a tool whereas an iPad is more like a game toy in my opinion. If you want to download, I wonder whether iPad suits you. After all, its storage will not be as large as your laptop. And you will have to spend extra charges for an iPad. Such as you have to pay for the Apps etc.
I love China

Oh, storage is also a big deal for me, because I like keeping files in my computer. Right, maybe a laptop is really better option for what I need it for.
Right now, its 80:20, laptop against iPad, for me.

Keep your laptop! With your laptop you can do more things than with an iPad and I can tell you that when I see someone with an iPad I laught because they are so ridiculous while messaging or taking photos with that tablet. I definitely suggest you to don't sell your laptop that is still new. I think surfing, emailing and mylotting are easier to do with a laptop and even if you want to bring it outside you can always to buy a bag so you can move it without problems. I even think iPad is totally uncomfortable!

Thanks for the advice. I think people just buy iPad for the fad. Right now, its 70:30,laptop against iPad, for me.

Just like others said, it depends on your needs and how you will use it. In fact, i also find having both make the other one useless. If the case is you only need this for mylotting, and a sort of downloading, it is not bad at all to use the laptop however, i find it hard on how you can type fast on its screen. Actually, i more prefer laptop than ipad because it is more functional than that of the ipad which is mostly use for having fun unlike for laptops which can be use either for fun and for business purposes.

Just to add, that might not be a problem really. Haha. It has a keyboard that you can connect to it, if you want to. :) however, it is just smaller than those of notebook comptuters.

Oh yeah, that was also one of my concerns on iPad. I would need to do a lot of typing, and it may not be as easy on an iPad. Thanks.

It seems to be more convenient to have an IPad for its small size. But if you sell your newly-bought laptop, you will lose quite a lot of money as it is now a second-hand stuff, which is supposed to be cheaper when you sell it. If I have the same case, I will still keep it instead of selling it as a second-hand. Take care, jureathome.

I've decided to just keep my laptop, and in the near future, when I have extra money, Id get myself a tablet.

I own both and I wouldn't be without my laptop. The Ipad is nice but it's a different operating system than a regular laptop so it's definitely a different surfing experience. Webpages, email programs, etc. all display differently on the Ipad. You also don't have a regular keyboard such as you have on a laptop. If you do a lot of typing, such as you would do here on MyLot or if you do any writing online, you would miss having the regular keyboard.
My recommendation would be to save up for the Ipad and get it as an additional device, but don't give up your laptop to get it.

That's exactly what I have in mind this time. I'll keep my laptop and keep it up to date, as much as possible. Hoping to keep it for at least 3 years.

In my opinion your laptop is too new to be replace unless it didn't served you the way you have expected it. If you can buy an IPad without trading in or selling your lappy it's more better. You can bring the IPad being smaller and more convenient with lesser in weight than the laptop. Besides, laptop have larger capacity then an IPad.

Well first, the choice depends on your ability to pay. If you had the chance to buy IPAD, no sale and thus lose your laptop, in my opinion would be the best move. Clearly I can not know if you can afford this, however, you, by the use you do with your computer I can only recommend to buy the new and innovative product apple. That said, the choice should only be personally yours.

Well, I can afford to buy an IPad even if I don't sell my laptop, but I find it useless to have both. I think I'm concerned that my laptop may be a better keep than a new IPad. I hate reading thru gadget features and reviews, because I can't really relate to most of the stuff described..all those MBs, MGhz, etc...

hmmm it depends on how you have to deal with it. like if you think it is more convenient and also money wise, then you can go for it. an Ipad indeed is easy to carry and bring anywhere.

Oh and as far as suggestions, pump up that memory a bit. Memory is relatively cheap right now, and I have 4GB minimum in all my laptops, even my 11.6" dual core model, and my 3 year old Lenovo Thinkpads. I have 8GB in my MacBook Pro and in the desktop that I recently built. Push that HP up to around 4GB and watch how much faster it will be.

Hello friend,
I think a laptop is more workfull than a ipad. So my suggestion is don't do it. And Ipad is too easy to carry than a laptop it is also true.
Now you have to decide and it is depended on your work.
Nice to meet you. Have a nice day.

I did hear that iPads were made for mobile ebook reading and was inspired by the advent of kindle and sony readers. However, i already see a lot of people using it for other purposes such as gaming and just plain surfing.
