Can we help someone who will not help themselves?

I think most will agree that we cannot help another who will not help him or herself. In the end, all must walk their own path -- and the reason they are walking a particular path may not be clear to us, and maybe not even to them at the moment. We should do what you can to help others, of course. Show love and compassion whenever and wherever we can,but we must not get caught up in someone else's "story" to the point where we start to write it. What are your thoughts?

I agree with you fully. People have to want the help they are being offered and be willing to help themselves as well. Even if we think we can help a person, the person themself must agree to it. As hard as it is to understand, some people don't want to be helped and this can be heartbreaking to witness. Still, it is best to help one another, when it is possible.

The only thing that we can do is just advise them to keep active and encourage them to fire up their ability to be used in good ways. They should realize the will power inside them would them to success. Holy swear!! Good Luck!!

Hello Pose. I love the saying that God helps those who help themselves and I quite agree with it. Even if we offer help to someone who will not help himself, it is still useless because this kind of help is only temporary rather than permanent. I have often met such experiences among some of my students who do not want to study at all. I tried to tell them the reason why we should work hard at our majors and what it can do for us if we have well mastered what we have learnt and I have also tried to offer extra help to sacrifice my free valuable time to teach them, but they show no interest in it, making me leave them behind in the end. This kind of case shows that the inner factor of theirs is more important than the outer factor. We may push and try convince them, but we may not be likely to succeed. Therefore I hold the viewpoint that we can only help those who will help themselves, but not those who will not. Thanks for your nice discussion, Pose. Take care.

Hi William, Thank you my loyal friend for coming here once again. It is difficult to teach children who do not want to learn and I know that you care about the welfare of your students. Some will change in time but for those who don't, just do the best you can for them. Blessings.

The old saying,"God helps those who help themselves," is very true! In many cases those who are down and out, are the people who seldom help themselves. Street people who have no shelter from the storm, will tell you they like living on the street. Beggars beg enjoy their chosen trade, and could not imagine doing an honest days work. Give a man a fish, and feed him for a day! Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime!

We cannot help someone who doesn't help themselves. It will be very useless to help them or give them any advice if they don't want to listen or do anything to help them. I once help a friend but she didn't want anybody to help her, so I gave up.
