opinion about Greece

Greece

First of all, i gotta tell you i am greek. My question is, whats people's opinion around the globe about my country. I want you to be really HONEST and I dont mind hearing the ugly truth. I am sure, with all the economic problems my country has the past couple of years, we've become quite infamous. To begin with I am going to tell you that Greece, apart from discovering great things (democracy, sciences, etc) are the sole inventors of corruption, and in our days corruption is ruling the greek government. I hate to admit that we have worthless leaders, incapable of doing anything good for their country. Most people get money problems, while in the same time rich become richer (not paying taxes, not paying employees) because noone in the government reveals their doings...

I am in the middle between Greece and Spain, in Italy. We are not hearing much about Greece recently and were it not for a niece who is working there, I would not be aware of what is happening. Corruptionis at the bottom not only of your problems but those which we have here too. Surely it is time to get rid of all of the old-school poiticians, aspecially seeing the appalling results that they have caused, and let younger people take over? The situation could hardly get any worse than it is now

I think that some changes are just around the corner. After the elections in France and the changes in Holland too, I don't see the unity in Europe that there appeared to be until now. Change will come but whether it will be for the better is anyone's guess.

I also believe that most of the older politicians should retire and give the opportunity to the younger people to try and bring a fresh perspective to the problems. Unfortunately, I have noticed that, now that the elections day is approaching, a lot of people in the age of my parents are afraid of the change so much, that they are willing to vote for the same political parties and politicians even though they know that they are corrupted. I am sad to say that if this happens and the same people win the elections again, the situation in Greece will probably get even worst than it is now.

Funny, you asked, because my husband and I just recently talked about Greece and Rome. It's sad to note that a once superpower country is now struggling with their economy. But, I always love stories of Greek mythology.

Greek mythology and the stories about ancient Rome will never die, no matter what crisis comes along

So true..and Hollywood is making much money out of these stories. I wonder if countries being made a subject of a movie gets some royalty out of the movie profit.

I'm from the UK, and unaware I have to say of Greece's contemporary political and/or economic situation, but then I'm not a great consumer of the news. But I think it's fair to say that many perhaps most Britons would be similar to me in this respect. Greece of course played an incalculable role in the evolution of Western culture and civilisation, and when I think of Greece, that fact is foremost for me. There are quite a lot of British people of Greek and Greek Cypriot extraction in the UK, and as far as I know, they are quite content here. There are a good few famous Britons of Greek Cypriot extraction, including the singer and songwriter George Michael; musician Mick Karn, formerly of legendary '80s band Japan; and the artist Tracey Emin.

We British... - ...are an island nation, and therefore probably quite insular, regarding the rest of Europe.
I think it's fair to say that as an island race, we British are quite cut off, insular, with respect to the remainder of Europe...

I visited Greece when I was fourteen years old. I found it very picturesque and interesting. It was amazing to see the acropolis in Athens. Greece has a fascinating history. I know it is a beautiful place with friendly people. The language looks hard to learn. I heard on the news about the economic problems that Greece has. I hope that tourism will bring lots of money for it this summer. The tourist season will begin in May and end in October. It is a shame there is a worthless leader and the poor are getting poorer. Good luck to Greece this year and next year.

Thanks. Even though I think greece doesnt take good care of their tourists, and dont respect them the way they should. Plus, i dont like visiting athens and the acropolis, as much as visiting some really beatiful islands like paxos or skopelos for example.

To be honest I think your government stinks. They cheated and fooled and are corrupt. Now they let the rest of Europe, I should say the countries who once were rich(er) pay and worser bleed for it. I am realistic enough to say that our government stinks as well. Since they knew you live in a corrupt country, your government cheated and the only thing they wanted to do is to brag about one big European family. Thing is there is not one Europe. Europe only exist according to Americans. The countries in Europe are way too different to be one. Different in the way they work, believe, live. I don't blame the Greek I do blame the governments they are responsible for this economic crises. We, the people with low income have to pay for you now (and for the other bankrupt countries in Europe). The rich ones will walk out like always. The EU "government" in Brussel is one of the worst things that could have happen to Europe.

While I agree with you that Europe is made up of too many differing countries, cultures and people to become one united with common rules and laws concerning everything, I am not certain that all of the blame for the presnt crisi should be placed on those governments. Surely the crisis started on the other side of the ocean, long before we all became aware of it, in Wall Street and the banks there?

All things said are true. The government is really bad. However, greeks are really hardworking people. I lived and worked in the netherlands for a couple of years, so I can compare a good country with a bad one:P. Regarding the simple workers in greece though it's a completely different matter. For example my dad works everyday for about 12 hours, and his boss refuses to pay him. He gets less than half the money he should be getting, and he cant do anything about this, because the rules in this country are not applied:S. If you are rich however, Greece is like a heaven, you can do anything you want as long as you can corrupt some important people ..:P disgusting...can't wait to get outta here again.

acropolis hill - View of the Acropolis from the southwest, showing the Propylaia, the Temple of Athena Nike, part of the Erechtheion, and the Parthenon. Also visible on the South Slope are the Odeion of Herodes Atticus and the Stoa of Eumenes.
The problems that your country is facing is not unique. I think it happens to almost all the countries in this world albeit with different degrees. Those are common problems arisen from human weaknesses. We Malaysians just had a big demonstration in every parts of the country yesterday to protest the unclean tactics the government used in general elections. Corruption is a serious issue here. Bribery, kickback and cronyism are also facts of life here. But the people now is more conscious. They are better informed probably with the popularity of internet. So we are having movements to try to rectify those unfair practices before they drab our country down too deep. It is a matter of will power. If the population wants it, it can be done. Corruption can be exterminated. I like Greece. I like the historical buildings. It is my dream that one day I will have the chance to visit the Acropolis Hill to see the Temple of Athena Nike and the Parthenon. I hope the sites are being protected well as I read that damages to the buildings have been found as a result of the tourists having free and easy access to them without guidance.

Yes.. i heard as well that the acropolis is getting damaged, mostly from athens' smog. I think they realised that though and started taking some precautions. If I was a tourist in greece though I would definetely go for a quite little island like paxos, ithaca or skopelos for the summer. I despise big cities, especially the ones in Greece. They lack parks..only thing you can see is a grey mass.
