A strange thing...

I thought about how to describe this problem I have in the title more clearly but it requires a little bit explanation. I sleep very little during workday-about 5 hours a night but lately I sleep even less because the moment I lie down I feel at least two times more awake. Because I sleep so little I've never had problems falling asleep and this problem is really causing me trouble. It's been like this every single night for the past week and a half: I barely have energy to drag myself to take myself the bath. After I take a shower I feel slightly refreshed but I do things for the next half an hour so I feel like I'm about to fall asleep standing up and then when I lie down I suddenly feel wide awake. I sometimes lie for an hour staring at the walls despite the fact that I was extremely tire before I went to bed. I don't know what to do and it's really been upsetting my everyday life. Has this ever happened to you or to someone you know? Do you have trouble sleeping sometimes?Do you have any unique ways to fall asleep?

Hi ShadowSky, sorry you are having difficulty getting yourself together...But I have to say these actions sound so familiar to me...I go to sleep at 3-4 o clock every morning..I know its not proper but I am actually not sleepy...until that time..even if then. Thank god I am not working, but even when I was working I only got about 5=6 hours of sleep...It just what I was in a habit and i guess my body go use to it..and the funny thing, I can not sleep during th day...never...once I am up at around 9:00am I am awake until 3-4 am....I don;t even get sleep during the day.. Good luck with your issue....

I usually go to sleep at a normal time during week days even if I stay awake for a long time but during the weekend I behave the exact same way you do. It's not something I do on purpose though and sometimes I honestly feel like the Sun, which is 150 million kilometers away and the light takes about 8 minutes to travel , is aiming straight for my face. I'm joking about it now but it really makes me mad in the mornings.

Well i have never had any problems like that.I just switch off the lights and lay down for a while and i will go to sleep in a little while unless i am worried about something. Maybe it is just because of stress. It can sometimes cause sleeplessness. So try to listen to soothing songs before going to sleep. This might help.

I've had a lot of health issues related to stress but it hadn't occurred to me that it might be the reason for this problem as well.I also like to listen to music before I fall asleep but my headphones are broken and I keep forgetting to buy new ones, because I'm really distracted...SO do you listen to music before falling asleep and if yes, which is your favorite song?

Yea.I too go to sleep with my headphones plugged in.Its kind of a habit now.And my favorite songs are a mix of Hindi songs and English songs. So even if i tell you which they are,You won't understand them.If you are interested in listening to them,i will give you the link so that you can listen to them. Now tell me which your favorite songs are/is?

I have an entire playlist called "sleepy songs" which I use when I want to put myself in a mood to sleep but right now I can't decide which one is my favorite...

You can read a book before you fall asleep, then keep thinking about what you have read in the book. Little by little, you will be sleeping.

I already do that sometimes but one of the responses posted a bit earlier points out that my problem might be caused by my brain associating my bed with something other than sleep so I decided to give this theory a chance and stop doing anything other that sleeping in my bed .

I had something like this when I was a student, sometimes even when I had a very stressful job. I was very exhausted by the end of the day, but when I went to bed I just couldn't fall asleep. Maybe my brain couldn't stop being active. Honestly I'm not sure what helped, I tried herbal teas and milk before going to bed, sometimes worked, sometimes not. You should give yourself a day off time to time when you just relax and get some rest. We tend to abuse our body to perform well, but it's not good for our health.

I guess I'll try the tea trick since it actually sounds nice and if it doesn't help at least it will improve my mood :)

i don't know whether this is a strange thing.. basically i love sleeping verymuch... its really a funnything that the best way to get sleepy easily is to read the books which i don't want to read.. its an easy task for me to avoid my sleep in the late nights if i'm with my friends or watching a movie or something else...... but books... they are my sleeping pills ......

Books are my sleeping pill as well. I don't know what caused me to lose my sleep before like that but the problem just somehow took care of itself apparently...

I love sleeping..I only got 7 hours/night to sleep though I want to sleep more..but because I also have work so I am not able to..sometimes my eyes get closed in my workplace..having enough sleep makes you really refreshed..I think you should take a medicine in your sleeping problem..

I hate taking medicines but if the problem persists I'm going to have to go to a doctor.I totally understand what you mean when you say your eyes are closing-that's what I feel like right before my head touches the pillow, haha!

You see, I can cite a similar thing happened to me to me last summer when I was on holiday at sea. I, ok, I slept a little late to spend much time on the PC. The next morning, I woke up around noon and, to say clearly, I felt more tired than before! I could not recover, and then to combine very little up to 5.00 PM. Then I left the warmth and I began to be more energetic. But the next day, everything is repeated. I emphasize that this has happened only for a short time and, not coincidentally when I was on vacation. Fortunately, there is almost never repeated. I now have a cycle of sleep / awake quite regular.

I guess it must have been due to change of environment or over excitement(which might be the reason for my problem as well)...After all vacations are a nice thing and can make a person feel energetic and excited...

I slept many years (about 20) for only 2-3 hours a night. Felt more active at that time as now when having more night rest. I still have periods (weeks) I can hardly sleep and am awake after 2 hours or so. first I went out of bed, since I felt very awake too, doing things incl. housekeeping etc. Problem: I feel broke as soon as the day starts. I dont get out of my bed anymore. Thoughts etc I write down and promise myself to deal with it later/at daytime. I also tell myself sooner or later I will sleep and this will be over. I think it somehow helps.. the periods I am not able to sleep at night are getting shorter.

Wow!20 years with only 2-3 hours of sleep a night? That's unbelievable but I guess if you're doing OK with so little rest you must have a really strong body...I'm a student and when I have to study for a big test it happens sometimes that I pull off an all-nighter but I also crash in the day. While at night I feel more energetic without sleep when the day comes the tiredness really hits me,just like you...

I've had that problem most of my life. The doctors usually say it's because your body doesn't associate your bed with sleeping anymore. Do you do stuff like reading or watching tv in your bed? Because that could be the reason. In any case, when you're this awake, staying in bed isn't going to solve anything. The advice experts usually give is: try for 15 minutes. If you can't sleep after that, get up and find something that relaxes your mind until you feel sleepy again.

This actually sound really reasonable to me because lately I've started reading while lying down on my bed and after I'm done I watch TV so now I guess my mind associates my bed with reading and watching TV...I'm going to try to see if that distraction until I feel sleepy again method works...
