Roy Hodgson only works well with mediocre players

Some say the Roy Hodgson has only been successful when he has worked with teams with no expectations and he is good at getting the best out of mediocre players and therefore the England job is not right for him. Surely we have a squad made up of mediocre players baring Rooney? I think it's time we got to grips with our overhyped expectations and realise we are not Spain and won't be for the foreseeable future. Given the circumstances I think he's the best man for the job but I'm sure many will disagree.

Well England still has great players, their main problem is morale, usually they got dq in penalties, so I soon as F.Capello didn't manage to fix it a British manager should be the next choice. No all he has to do is too work with his team before the start of the euro.

I agree with greenplankton, England is one of the top teams. Just consider Spain before their golden era they were considered as a "losers" team but still they had amazing players especially in the last 2 decades. So all England needs to turn the page from a "losers" team to a "winners" team is a manager that can lead them to success and raise his team morale. I don't think that if Hodgson would make big changes, like bringing all the youngsters and leave all the veterans behind he would see many results, he should just take the best players he thinks :) Especially now that England after a loooong loooooong time has a good keeper (Hart) :P

I disagree that England doesn't have great players. There are so many talented players in the ranks of England and it often depends on how the manager picks his team and what sort of strategies he wants his team to use. Look at how Villas-Boas messed up a strong Chelsea team which caused many blunders and after their departure, Di Matteo stuck to simple and familiar strategies which allowed his side to bounce back and register victories all over again.

I am still not sure if Roy Hodgson is still the best person for the job. Tottenham Spurs manager Harry Redknapp should have been given the green light instead, but he was gracious enough to congratulate Hodgson.
So far, the response from the England players have been good, with the latest coming from Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. I think the appointment of Hodgson comes just before England's participation in the prestigious Euro Championships tournament.

Yeah Harry Redknapp and Alex Ferguson have thrown their support behind Hodgson. Former England manager is the latest person to have some words for the West Brom manager. He cautioned that it would be difficult to create a 'winning mentality' in the team. Not sure what he meant though.

That was my take when I saw that Roy had been given the job. It was for me an admission by FA that England are not the Manchester United or even Tottenham Hotspur of European football. But are rather a Fulham or West Brom of Europe and in that sense Roy Hodgson is a good choice.
Of course, we will see how he performs in the Euros.
Cheers!

One thing that does strike me about Roy is his calm demeanour. Also, he's not dim, unlike Harry Redknapp, and is quite capable of conducting a press conference in Norwegian if he wanted to.
It makes a nice change having someone with a modicum of intelligence at the helm for England BUT it's STILL all down to the players WANTING success. If all they're after is their thousands of pounds a week (they waive their fee for charity whenever they pull on the England shirt) for their respective clubs then they don't deserve to play for the national side.
I'm sure there are loads of players in the Championship and below who would DIE to play for England. All Roy has to do is snuff out the egos. I don't think Harry is capable of doing this as he's far too friendly with his favourites such as Scottie (goes through me when he says that) Parker et al. Roy will pick the players on merit.
Can't stand Rooney by the way as he's bound to get sent off at some point during the European Championships!

I agree that England is made up of mediocre or at best average players. As for his appointment, I am pretty surprise by it. I remember someone saying that England need an Englishman to manage the national team. So getting a foreigner to helm it, they are just going back on their words. But I have a feeling that Roy might be a good choice. With his appointment, then expectation will drop. Everyone knows England will screw things up when expectation is running high.
