MP3: Can you really hear the difference?

Hi all, i was thinking about mp3,and how much space,connection speed,battery and time we throw away with them. Many years ago we got 128/160kbps mp3s because of slow connections,now we have 320kbps mp3...but, why? Seriously,someone can REALLY tell the difference,for example, between a ~200kbps VBR encoded mp3 and a 320kbps CBR one?
