Rat problem!

Below our balcony there is little place with plants and flowers. In there, there is a hole that apperently is home to a pretty big rat. The particular rat has been taking walks many times around my balcony. I tried shutting the hole by stuffing it with dirt, but obviously this was not a difficulty for the rat, since it just dug it again. It's pretty uncomfortable, because i cannot open they window-door of that balcony, afraid it might enter the house. Any ideas on the matter? I would prefer to avoid a mouse trap or poison, but if it comes to this i might end up trying it. I am thinking doing something with his hole-nest, maybe put some cement in or something, but he may just go create a new hole 1 meter away.

I think the best was is to just give them rat poison, it is quite clean than putting trap- they can still escape it or dig through it...they have really sharp and hard teeth, you can even get hurt too.

Yes, I started to consider rat poison actually. I think I heard that if a rat is killed with poison, its body get somehow dehydrated, so that it will not become really smelly. That would be pretty cool actually.

If you are not afraid of snakes you can have it within your house. Snakes like rats as their and I am sure all of it will be gone. Before I was seeing some rats in the house but I noticed that they were gone for some reasons I didn't know. And then I found out that it was because of the snakes.. so I'm not seeing rats anymore but snakes! well if you ask me, I prefer rats than snakes. If you don't like snakes you can use a poison. I bought a poison before and I think it was very effective since sadly our dog was accidentally poisoned also. And when I tried to open the powder poison, it was so strong that I couldn't breath properly even though I was already wearing a mask. I forgot the name of the poison 'cause it was a very long time ago. Even the rats of our neighborhood were killed.

I think i'll pass to this suggestion.:P I don't have anything with pet snakes, but I currently have to take care of my fish, my hamsters and my birds..so it's gonna become a zoo in my house if I go on like this.:p

Just use the poison or trap, it'll be easier and lesser painful for you. Hurry before it decides to make a family there, then you'll have problems. We rarely have mouse or rats anymore because there are many cats around. They're not our own but they tend to cover the ground easily - they're the neighbors and we don't mind as long as it doesn't bother our day-to-day life. You could get a cat, an alley cat, so that it could catch that rat. But still, poison or trap it the better option for me. Good luck! Have a great MyLot experience ahead!

Never thought it would make a family! Thought it was alone.:P We actually have some alley cats in the neighbourhood but apparently they are lazy. Not to mention that rat is pretty big it might scare of most kitties:P Many year ago thee was a piece of food on the same very spot, and a rat was chasing a cat around the food...talking about irony! My father then threw a tile from the balcony when the rat was eating. He actually killed it because the edge of the tile hit the rat's neck like a guillotine.:P

I had a similar experience to yours.About 15 years ago i lived in an old house. There were holes here and there , which is so good for the rats.Often we heard the rats' noises.Sometimes we saw a rat run across the room. So we wanted to get rid of them. We bought a mouse trap. Believe it or not we caught 7 rats a day.

If you don't want to use a mouse trap or poison, you can care a cat in your house. I am very sure that all rats will be go to another place. There are many rats in my house also, but right now i cant see them at all since i care a cat. You can try it.

Just put out some food with a stick and box over it. When he comes for the food he will hit the stick and the box with trap him. They you can relocate him. I seen it on loony tunes, so i know it will work.
