If you want to write professionally, good English grammar, spelling and syntax are essential. Also, if you use websites that utilize pay per view, the clients that pay well won't look at your work. I make 3000.00 per month, working 30-35 hours a week. I am also writing an in depth instructional e-book on becoming a freelance writer.
Go to iwriter.com. A beginning writer there earns at the minimum 1.01 for a 300 word article, and most articles start at 1.62. After you have written 35 articles, and have a rating of 4.5 stars or higher, you will be an elite writer, and can earn up to 15.00 or more for an article. Clients can also request you, and you earn more for requests. This is an excellent place to hone your writing skills and get ready for the really high paying sites. The first week I wrote there, choosing the articles I wanted to write, I made 85.00 and receive 7 special requests. This past Tuesday, I got a 954.18 payment into my PayPal account. If you have a good command of the English language, then don't waste your talent for 1/10th of a penny per article view. there are much better ways to become a professional writer.

I've actually done all of the online writing that I've ever done on Helium and they actually are able to pay in both ways. They do have some assignments that you can choose to write to and one person that submitted an article to that title will be paid an upfront payment of $1-$2. However, all of the articles that you write on the site are eligible for paid per view as well.
I've been writing there for about a year and a half and I've been paid several hundred dollars from them and am paid on time every time.
