Do you know of anyone who has ever been scammed?

I recently had a conversation with a buddy of mine who was giving advice to someone on another chat site. He was answering questions about the elderly who are more prone to being victims of scams, and how to protect yourself from those who look a little shady.
These guys/gals are very good at what they do, they know the games, and there seems to be no sign of them letting up.
I can tell you that I am not the smartest guy in the world, but I would like to think I can sniff out a predator when I see one. Yet, I see all of these "smart" business savvy guys falling victim to this. I fear that if not careful, even I could become a statistic.
So, do you know of anyone who has ever been scammed, or maybe found out before it turned into a disaster, and what they did to protect themselves?

Earlier I got into some of them (7-8 years back) and in fact it was working well. But when the money heaped up into the priopritor's pocket, he started playing with his plans and system and finally collapsed. Many suffered huge losses and spoiled name and wealth. About 5-6 similar cases happend to me and later on stopped everything. Even if good or bad, I never pay attention for a 2nd time and say 'NO' upfront and I don't want a million worth profit, even if they offer within a day.
Work and earn. I know 100s of such cases but I sitll here only with myLot, why, I can smell the genuineness here and as you said, I can smell the good or bad when it appears to me.
Nice tipic and the scammer sare sailing the huge ships only because the common man can't really understand them and this is the key to such scanner's success. They are aware that out of 10, they can catch atleast 1 and they will keep trying and few will definitely will fell in their magic words!!

well, I have known friends who were scammed and I recently had an episode where I was nearly got scammed. My friend's stories usually include being recruited into some kind of program or business and they are encouraged to invest money. Some did and some didn't. those who did lost their money and as far as I know, are already trying to cover up or making stories to their families(because of shame, I suppose).
My own experience included the impersonation of ym friend who keep texting me for money. The numbers was registered as my friend and the guy knows a little bit about myself and my friend's relationship. I don't know how the number got into my phone but he keeps borrowing money from me in large sums. Finally,. I got annoyed and angry and phoned my friend via his mother. It turns out that he doesn't know anything. about what I have been saying, even when I showed him the messages exchanged between us. Thankfully, I haven't given any money to that stranger.

I have been a victim of a scam last December. I had this online friend whom I met at a dating site. He seemed to be a good person and started exchanging emails with me. While I am not really on the lookout for a relationship, I replied to his emails for the sake of friendship until such time that he started sending those romantic emails. Last December, he emailed me that he is sending over some gifts for me in time for Christmas. I was quite surprised but I was also excited to receive a gift, who won't anyway? A few days before Christmas, when the package was due to arrive, I received an email from the courier that I had to pay more than a thousand dollars as penalty for the perfume and currency that was contained inside the package. Fortunately, I was not in possession of such money and my boss advised me against sending such money because it might be a scam. I checked forums on the current scams and I found lots of members who had the same experience. The email send by the courier to those members was exactly the same as the one sent to me. I have been retelling this story ever since and have even created a discussion so that other members will learn from my experience.
