Travel Gift (Pasalubong)

Philippines

It has been a tradition that whenever leaves a place for vacation or any other trip, they had to bring travel gifts or "pasalubong" when they returned back and give it to colleagues, friends, classmates, family, etc. One of the most familiar pasalubong especially when someone came from other countries is chocolate. Some of my colleagues coming from nearby countries always give us chocolates as travel gift. Sometimes, these items were not bought from the country they came from but purchased from Duty-Free Shops located near the airport. Why do you think chocolate is the most famous pasalubong from a person coming from other countries?

Oh I love chocolates,I like it as pasalubong.I guess that's why it is the common pasalubong because it is easy to buy and everyone really appreciate. We won't worry to if the person won't like it, just like when giving shirts which is sometimes bigger or smaller or sometimes they don't like the color or designs.

I think, any travel gift or pasalubong will be appreciated but chocolates has been the most common. Another possible reason is that it may be cheaper compared to any other items like shirts, perfume, etc. The cost per piece of the items mentioned was already comparable to a pack of chocolates that can be divided into many.

Chocolates are the safest to give. You won't have to worry about the size, the color, the design. The sight of chocolates just delights people, except if you have toothache or tonsillitis of course. Another reason may be is the size. Chocolates won't eat as much space in your luggage. It's a lot easier to carry and you won't have to worry with flavors. =D

Yeah, I agree. =) I'm a chocolate lover myself but I'm not that particular with chocolates (dark, white, Belgian, Swiss, etc., I eat 'em. They're all but the same to me. For me, they're "love". Teehee!) (^^,) I think most people love chocolates. =)

You got a point there. It is really handy compared to other items that can be used as travel gifts or pasalubong. Another thing is that it can be bought elesewhere. Every country has different varities of chocolate. Thanks for responding.

Personally, I love chocolate and nothing can be sweeter than being remembered and have a chocolate as a gift. Maybe this is the reason why this is the most favorite form of gift or pasalubong. Anybody would feel that they are special if they receive chocolate as a gift. Aside from the fact that this is easy to find and it has a longer life even without freezing.

You got a point in there, even a small piece of chocolate will be appreciated. It is really easy to buy, you don't need to buy it from the country you came from. You can have it at the airport or at the Duty Free shop near the airport.

Yes, chocolates are the most famous pasalubong in the Philippines. Whenever a family member, friend or officemate travels, we often expect chocolate as a pasalubong from that person. I agree with the other commenters that it's because it is convenient and easily available, but it could be also that it is not as expensive as buying other items such as clothing, shoes, bags, etc. Buying such items for each and every person would end up as more expensive while buying a bar or several packs of the mini versions of chocolate is a lot cheaper and equally appreciated. Plus, you don't have to worry about them liking the design of the bag, or if the shirt would fit, etc. But in my opinion, I think it's also nice if the pasalubong was something native and unique to the country that was visited.

Yo are right, you will never be worried if they are going to like it or not because still it is chocolate that can be eaten by anyone. Just what you said, buying native from the country they visited will still be a good pasalubong. Like my wife, when she went to Thailand, instead of buying chocolates from duty free, she bought several bags of spicy and sweet tamarind, one of their trademark. Also, she bought some souvenir shirts and coin purse. I think, there are also chocolates from other countres. hehehe. Thanks for responding.

Yes she didn't buy any chocolates but items from Thailand. You are definitely right, when going to a country known for their chocolates like Belgium and Switzerland, you should bring home chocolates from that country and not from Duty Free Shops located near the airport.

That was very nice of your wife and a very good pasalubong. Sweet and spicy tamarind from Thailand is the best! And you're right almost all countries make chocolate now. Though I guess if you're coming from countries that well-known for making chocolates like Belgium, then you definitely should bring home chocolates as pasalubong.

In my own perception, chocolates are the most common "pasalubong". Why? When we were colonized by Americans, they introduced a lot of things; one of this stuff is chocolates, imported goods were given as a gift to people whom they acquainted with.

Chocolates could be considered as the most famous pasalubong from a person coming from other countries maybe because it could be bought in any store may it be in a store, or malls as such. Thus, it is also well loved not only by children but also adults. And It is the most convenient pasalubong we could buy in any countries we visit.

Yes you are right, chocolates are also applicable to adults. You are also right that it can be bought in a local malls, but a little bit expensive compared to locally produced ones. This might be a reason that when giving an imported chocolates, kids as well as adults are fond of receiving them as pasalubong.
