So my friend and I went for a long walk at the Silver Lake Bog.
The ferns were burning up becuase a lot of trees had fallen down. So they were exposed to way too much light. That's the first time I've seen pitcher plants in the wild and they were really big. The berries on the wintergreen plants were the biggest I've ever seen. They're usually so much smaller than that.
Interesting how they made a boardwalk thru the bog. You stay high and dry while being able to walk without getting stuck. They had benches, too where you can rest. It was really nice.
We went back to the car just in time. It started to rain. It rained the rest of the day. We were very lucky.
So do you remember seeing something for the first time during a walk? Have you noticed differences in the same kinds of plants, trees, houses, etc. in different areas? What kinds of things do you enjoy looking at when you go for a walk?

Bog! I know what they are, but I don't know that there bogs out here . . . though there are some marshy type areas as part of a reserve. That sounds like a neat place you walked through! Yes, your timing was great - although I would think it'd also be a fun walk if you were equipped for the rain (the wetness/gloom gives places like that a different "feel"). I don't know many plant names - I just know what they look like (how terrible - and my father is a gardener!). But lately I've been looking at residential plants a little closer . . . we recently bought a house and I'm trying to brainstorm how to do the landscaping - I'm looking at other houses for inspiration. I am particularly interested in tall bushes and wall covering plants (something that would grow on large wall size trellises). Living at the apartments for so long, I never really took notice til now!

Sounds like lots of fun. Jasmine, hops, lots of climbing stuff would be nice. Jasmine for the scent, hops for the color and the changes. Plus some are good enough to sell to brewmasters. Grapes can pull things down. We had a trellis and it pulled it to the ground in no time. You need logs nailed together for them. Let us know what you decide. I have never grown kiwi, but I think it might be a vine and it might be able to be grown on walls. I'd have to researh it further.
We have pampas grass in our area for tall stuff. Looks beautiful blowing in the wind. Have fun and let us know what you figure out.

Oh - thank you for your suggestions . . . you sound really knowledgeable about plants and landscaping! Ah - I was thinking grapes as one of our options (so that it would be functional as well - we could munch on them when the fruit was in season) - but I'm glad you told me it can pull things down - I didn't even think of that. There is a house that has green grapes growing in the corners of their boundary walls . . . looks pretty - but the vines are along concrete walls - I won't have that option of sturdiness in that particular area of the yard - so grapes may be out. I'll have to look into Jasmine and hops - and pampas!!! It may take a while for me to figure things out - but yah, I'll let you know!!!

In addition to above . . .
Ok, I just looked those up!!! That house that has the grapes also have jasmine - with those little white flowers - very pretty and fragrant!! I wonder if they attract a lot of bees? I'll have to research that. And hops and pampas look like they have a lot of potential too. There are pampas growing in our local college and the kids think they look like feathers - hee hee. That's be kind of cool to add length to some of the short boundary walls we have. Thanks again, writersedge!

I'm glad that you and your friend went for a walk. It is nice to be able to hang out with our friends and do something that's inexpensive. That's also that you got to see the berries so big. I think that it would be nice to travel around and see the different scenaries and trees. I hope that I will be able to do things like that some day. For the most part in our area when we go for a walk I just enjoy being out of the house. It's nice to get out and get some fresh air.

Yes, it is nice to get out and enjoy fresh air, that's for sure. Since our taxes pay for these paths to be maintained, it's a good idea to enjoy them. At the rate things are going, they might not maintain them in the future or have to ask for volunteers.

Yeah that is definitely a good way of looking at it. I haven't recently thought about things like that but it now makes me want to go to the park and go for a walk right now. Glad to hear that you are taking advantage of those scenic areas. I'm hoping that our family will be able to go camping this summer and enjoy the outdoors.

Your walk at Silver Lake Bog must have been really lovely. The boards made it possible for you to stroll very easily without getting mucky. Luckily you got back to your car just before the rain.
At this time of the year I see the beautiful blue bells and they appear to gently dance in the breeze. The usually are seen in woodland in the United Kingdom in late April and early May. I love to walk along the river and see the swans swimming along. Every weekday I push my disabled son's wheelchair to school. I like seeing the purple flowered bush.
My daughter recently began going to a different child minder. She has to because her usual childminder is now on maternity leave. We take my disabled son to school and then go further along the path than normal to get to the new child minders house. There is a house burnt out along that bit of the pathway.

Sad about the burnt house. I always feel badly for people who get burned out.
The blue bells sound pretty.
Wonderful way for your children to appreciate nature, to go on those walks.
Yes, and the boardwalk also saves the path from destroying the bog and keeps people on the path so they're less likely to get lost.
