Don't We Need Bookstores Anymore?

Here in our suburb several bookstores closed late last year and early this year. My husband said that it is because of the popular trend now on publishing and buying eBooks, that these bookstores don't earn much anymore and so they have to close. They just maintain their online sites where customers can purchase books from there and have them delivered or simply purchase eBooks. I love visiting bookstores because I love books, I love to read and write as well. I hope that bookstores will still be in business with physical stores and not just online. How about in your place/country? Does this same thing happen too?

I feel sad about this. I admit that I like reading ebooks too because they're very convenient and handy but still nothing compares to reading the actual physical books. for me, even though i read ebooks more, i still find it more exciting and accomplishing to read in actual books than just ebooks.

And also, I like reading in bookstores too. I like hanging out inside and just read. I cannot imagine the world when the bookstores and bookshops are gone.

Hi butterscotsh, I agree with you. I feel sad about it but technology is dominating even bookstores now. Everything can be done online now. I love reading books also, it is one of my favorite pastimes. I also love reading books in bookstores. I love bookstores As much as I love libraries.

I still love visiting bookstores and Im glad the bookstores in my city is still in business, what I like from the bookstore because they have book sale every month, I can buy the books i need for a very cheap price, last time I bought a text book for like 0.75 each book and $2 for novel, all brand new and is still sealed. I dont like reading ebooks because I will need a gadget or ebook reader to read the ebook unlike a printed book where I can bring the printed book anywhere anytime I like. I like sitting under a tree and read my favorite books, I dont have to worry about the battery or if I dont bring a charger for the tablet pc to read the ebook.

Hi fashion fever. I cannot agree with you more. I like bringing a book or two in my carry bag most of the times. Reading a book, for me, is one good way to spend time instead of just Wasting and letting time to pass. If I have to leave home to go to school to pick up the kids, I have to slip A book in my bag so I do not waste my time while waiting.

I love books too. Books can be really expensive though. I dont buy them for me I either borrow them from libraries or get them free from places. For my daughters birthday I went to barnes and noble and tjmaxx and bought her probably 15 chapter books. That and video games is pretty much what she wants. Borders used to be around here and waldenbooks and over the years both have shut down.

In our place which is still a little bit behind when it comes to technology, bookstores still exist and people still go to bookstores. But I think they are beginning to lose relevance with the advent of modern gadgets that make reading books possible anytime, anywhere.

We DO need bookstores for the fun of browsing and selecting and feeling the new books in our hands. It's a great feeling to feel the cover and the texture of the paper. A great experience will be lost when books are only going to be published online; there will be no physical pleasure. It takes more than a cover and a good title to get excited when buying a book.

i still prefer books. it's better to have the real published one than the online books.. we're not rally sure if its copyright were approved. and plus! it is so nice to see full set collections of books. i'm dreaming of a house so full of books for my soon to be children. it's like an heirloom for them. and ebooks can damage your eyes because of too much radiation when you're exposed longer in front of the computer.

For me,there are different between reading ebook compare with real book.Reading on ebook usually for some need for information but reading on book is an enjoyment.Bookstore closed mainly are not cause by population of ebook but physical condition like shop expenses, employee salary, raising rent that can't be covered by profit-margin.

I still love visiting bookstores too since i prefer real books than ebooks. They should not be closed down since some people still prefer real books to and it is better since you can look and touch the covers and great art.

Aww... that's sad. I love bookstores, too. I love libraries. I love reading, touching, feeling books (even smelling the pages of new books! ). I also like books printed in pretty paper or something like that. I hope that day will not ever come, or if ever it will, not in my lifetime.

I guess this is one bad influence of internet. E-book and website seems like able to replace the book, even I never interest in reading e-book or collect some. I'm sad to hear that some bookstores near you was closed. reading book and e-book is quite different, and visiting a website and bookstores are different case too. I love bookstore because I'm not only read but also had chance to explore some education. today we still need bookstore than only visiting website. I'm glad that several bookstore near my place is still exist and hopefully they were never closed!

Yeah indeed ebooks are really in demand now due to internet. Here, bookstores are still open cause they are not just selling books but some office and school supplies also which are complete so you can buy what you need whether office or school supplies.

This is sad. Unfortunately books are getting more and more expensive, and while earlier we used to collect them, now many people can't even afford to buy one. EBooks are getting more popular, and even though I read them more too now, I would still prefer real books.

I don't view bookstores just as a business.Bookstores, for me,are the places from where we can buy books on the topics of our choice. It's true that we may as well buy them from online stores, but I have seen their we get books mainly in English.I like to read books in my mother tongue,Hindi, which I can get easily from the bookstores in my town without getting to wait for days or weeks for the VPP.However there are many books that I want to read, but they are not available in these book shops. The owners of these book shops make them available to me within just two or three days.In my opinion, bookstores are still relevant.

Well, our local Borders bookstores closed because the company went bankrupt. Which is a shame. I think of regular book stores would lower their prices, they'd see an uptake in their profits. So many people have Kindles and Nooks. I do not. Granted, I prefer to order my books online, but they are still real, physical books. However, one of my favorite bookstores is a book store that sells used books. I just love book stores in general. I hope they won't become a thing of the past.

I enjoy visiting bookstores too. It is great to be able to hold a new book with the feel and smell of the paper. I guess it is a flashback to my infancy as I was taught to read by my older sisters before I went to school and every birthday and Xmas time that was a book for me. I have a Kindle now, and it is very convenient and easy to read. But I guess that every book that I have purchased for it, is another real book that I won't buy. It is a shame, but it is progress. I still have loads of paper books, and I have noticed that people still buy them on line when I have put them up on Amazon to sell. I think whether it be paper or E-books, the Internet has cause enormous competition for the bookstores.. It's the same here in the UK as the world over I believe.. _Derek

Hi Alicia, Where I live, we just lost a couple of really good bookstores which made me sad and also a bit nervous. I love reading and the ebooks just are not the same. I've heard that the libraries are considering replacing books with cds and e-books. I sure hope not because I do rent books from the library all the time. I also love book stores. I usually don't actually buy books for myself from the bookstores but they make great gifts. I hope that these closings are due to the economy which hopefully will soon bounce back and not a growing trend.

I used to live in a place with a Borders Bookstore. For some reason, they had to close, and I really miss them. They had good discount coupons, and I used to go mad over them when they came out. After Borders closed, Barnes and Noble's sent us e-mails with their condolences, and offered us service. They're not that bad, but I miss Borders, because... well, there was something about those bookstores that made me feel happy.

Most of the people in our country purchase the things with ready cash. The people are much worried to do online shopping because day by day the scam sites are arising with in days. So every one purchase the things by cash. So the book sellers in Kerala do not face any problem. They are quite happy with their business.

Despite the availability of eBooks, Kindle, and all those sort of things which can be used in replacement of books, I am glad that we still have several bookstores here in our country. In my opinion, these eBooks should not replace the real thing because they are just accessible for a number of people who has access to such. What about those people, particularly students who does not have computer or kindle, or eBook reader? they still need books for that matter.
