Hi. I have recently adopted a cat from the outside. He was fixed in January. His eyes were watery with a brownish discharge that leaves a black ring around them, and they look pinkish to me. I had him on an antibiotic ointment for the longest time for his eyes, but it did not seem to help. His waste also stinks very badly. I have 5 other cats, and between them all it took a few days for it to smell that bad! I have to clean the litter all the time now. If I do not, the smell wafts through the door and into the entire house. I never had that issue with the original 5. I don't know if the eye thing is related to his stinkyness. He is on the same food as the others are. The only difference is when I feed them a can he will eat it all, so I put a LOT of water in his portion to keep him busy so the other guys can get some too. I doubt the canned food has an impact, they get it every few days. He does get some people food, but not every day, and I give him only a small portion. I noticed when I gave him a few slices of lunch meat he had gas and was writhing around, so I only give him a few pieces every now and again and that does not seem to upset him. Maybe 2-3 times a week he gets an extra snack. Also I have noticed his glands do not express when they need to, or they are terribly overactive. There are times I pick him up to cuddle and I get a stink bomb on my clothing. I don't know if this would be a medical problem or not. Does anyone have any advice for me, besides of course take him to the vet. I'm hoping to find some information first on what can be wrong. Money is terribly tight right now, and if these things are not dangerous to him then I won't worry about it until I can afford to take him in. I would love to, but as I said money is extremely tight and coming up with the extra just can't happen right now. I'm hoping that a few of you have some ideas about his condition.

I can't help with the stinkiness.. but the eye thing sounds like Herpes virus.. Most of my cats have it.. well most are carriers.. only a couple of my 14 actually show the runny eye symptoms. Lysine in his water may help with that.. but you can check with your vet.

It could be, but he has not received any tests for his eyes yet. I don't know if any of his brothers and sisters had the herpes, and I don't believe the momma did. I don't know who the father is, but all the strays I have seen around here seem to not have this.

My cats haven't been tested. the et just looked at them and said it was Herpes... It is a common thing just like the herpes virus most humans carry that cause cold sores... You can be a carrier without really showing any outward symptoms. many of my cats had it when they were babies (the runny eyes) and then they outgrew it... but it's still there and if they get sick it can manifest again.

ah, I see. Leonardo seems to not be able to keep the symptoms at bay. It is much better than it was when I rescued him, but even so, every few weeks he has a breakout and gets blackish gunk around his eyes.
