Why Save Money?

Philippines
May 15, 2012 8:50am CST
People today are increasingly becoming materialistic. We tend to buy items we do not really need, unmindful of how hard it is to earn money. Many have adopted the earn-and-spend lifestyle, neglecting the relevance of being thrifty. At a very young age, we were taught by our parents and teachers to save money. Many of us adopted this virtue in our younger years, keeping in mind its importance. However, we are exposed to various amounts of temptation to spend. We are bombarded with advertisements on radio, television, billboards and various publications. Many times, we are lured into buying things we do not actually need. With this, saving money has become a great challenge for all of us. What would be the best way to save money?

Learn to identify your needs and want. Also, live within your means. That's the two things that I go by everyday. Although, there would be days in a month that I treat myself after all the hard work I do. I hope this one helps. :)

I actually absolutely LOVE saving money. I do childcare in my home and when I make $25 I will just put $5 or $10 away. Whatever I make I put a certain portion of it away. I love seeing it add up. I am not saving for anything in particular but its my emergency fund, just in case. I feel safe and secure having that if I need it. I honestly do not like spending unless its needed for my kids. I have a very hard time spending on myself. My husband loves giving me money because he knows I will save some of it... =)

Well I do know how hard it is to earn money. When I go out with Dad I make my Dad spend for me, useful or not but when I go alone, I think if it's important or not before buying. It's 'cause I don't have a high pocket money and if I spend for useless things and spend my money, there'll be nothing left for useful things and I'll have to ask parents and your pocket will always be empty. Don't you think there will be a more reasonable spending of money when you know that after you finish it, you won't get anything? Parents should keep a limit while giving pocket money. And if you earn money yourself, why save money if you can't enjoy life without spending?

why is more stuff necessary? one needs to learn to be happy with the stuff one already has. i was watching a show yesterday and the girl had 65 pairs of shoes! that is just nuts. you can only wear one pear at a time. the key is to learn to live with less and not worry about what everyone else has. you can't take it with you.
• Philippines

correct.. i've heard like that here in our country too.. our former president's wife has over 100 pairs of shoes and all are bought from other countries and from big famous manufacturers.. she got a million dollar jewels too and she's proud to share it to everybody without thinking how my fellow men strive in poverty whereas indeed it must be their duty to help our nation since they have the power to do it. It's such a great disappointment for all of us.

I've been striving hard to save money but my salary is not just enough! But I keep on reading financial blogs and saving tips to motivate me to save all the time. Now, I congratulated myself for opening an account one more time and save some in it.

are you referring to opening a bank account? well, congratulations for that.. I am longing too for that time that I could open mine.. I'm a man and I must save money as early as possible because I know that it will be my obligation in the future to spend for everything necessary for living.

the best way to save money is to invest in yourself like buying self help books, next we should also go into long term financial investment. Start young and you will have a better life in the future.

thanks mervyn.. from now on, i'll do my best to control my money and save greater than what i am spending for my wants ;)

With people spending more than they make it can get really bad, especially when there's an emergency you weren't expecting, fortunately, I try not to do that with my money.

I am not really a materialistic people. Though there are times that I am tempted to buy things that I don't need. Right now I want to save money for my future. My father always told me to save money so that when the time you need it, you can just pick it from my pocket. People should be more smart nowadays. Buy things that you need not want.

Hi edison! Personally, I would make it a point to save primarily because I know that if I don't do it, I wouldn't be able to afford some things that I would want to buy for my self and my family.

i agree with you.. thanks for that response ;))

Pardon the pun but you are SO on the money with this comment. As a single woman (age 44), I have lately come to have a keener appreciation of where my money goes. To address your question directly, I think the savings comes from assessing our true needs vs. our wants. Often we are guilty of giving in to our wants because of the media pressures you mentioned above. What has been helpful to me is reading financial blogs and knowing that there are other people like me out there who need to be mindful of how they spend and to exercise more discretion when it comes to their "disposable" (is there such a thing?) income!

Correct! Sometimes my money will be spent to purchase my wants too.. Now, I've learned how important money is and that I am lucky to have it compared to my fellow men in other places.
