Poor little asparagus plants! - My very sickly looking asparagus plants!!

I just love asparagus, it is probably my favourite vegetable but it is one vegetable that I have never grown. A few weeks ago I bought six very weedy and feathery looking asparagus plants to try to grow in my little garden. The plants are making a little progress with a few new shoots (VERY small) sticking up. It is obvious that (despite the packaging saying that asparagus is 'quick growing') that these plants will not bear fruit for at least a few years. Have any of you MyLot members had any experience of growing asparagus and can you tell me just how long they do take to grow and do you have any tips for me? All responses gratefully received!!!!!!

I do not know if you are close enough, in Lancaster, to commercial production sites where you can drive up to the asparagus fields, but that is what you need to do. I'm from Georgia, & there is none grown there; but up in Pennsylvania, folks just cut what they need along the highways. When I was living in Delaware for a short time, there were asparagus farms around. If you can identify the plant, you could do as I did:I walked down a railroad spur until I located older plants growing wild, dug out the old gnarly roots & took them home and put them in better soil. Mature roots not only begin producing right away, but can be divided[cut into many pieces] for starting new 'patches' where little cultivation will be necessary. I'm a writer, not a farmer/gardener. Come to coinoftherealm.gather.com & try out the 'vegetables' I grow with my pen.

I got excited then but sadly I am in Lancaster UK !! No asparagus fields close to me I'm afraid!! We visit asparagus fields when we travel to the south east of the country t Norfolk there the farmers sell the asparagus in stalls by their gates. I shall take a look at your website. Thank you
