Baffled with Big Word's Pronunciation?

What do you do when you come across a big word or a word which you have not heard of or have never used it in your day to day communication. Do you try to pronounce it the way it should sound or do you refer your dictionary to check it's diphthong. Do you go online to check how it should be pronounced. As for me, I've bookmarked Dictionary.com and Thesaurus.com to help me with the pronunciation with the unfamiliar words. Referring the bulky Good old Oxford dictionary is a pain for me now.

I consider a new or "big" word as a challenge, and learn to pronounce it properly, and if it is a good one, I add it to my vocabulary. That's how I added such words as ameliorate and equivocally to name a few. The other ones I get from medical terminology, such as Pheochromocytoma and gadopentetate dimeglumine.

I think what you are doing is pretty much what I do, and that is probably the best way for those of us who are out of school to learn new words. It's good brain exercise for us to learn new things. Funny thing is right after we learn the word, we find short versions of it. I thought of one right after I posted the first response; an Oligodendroglioma, which is a nasty kind of brain tumor, that gets shortened to Olly. Have a great day!
