My poor, aching bones! Glucosamine and chondroitin to the rescue... or not?

I've just begun taking Joint Juice, a supplement drink that contains glucosamine and chondroitin. I've been drinking one a day for about a week now. I haven't noticed any difference but don't expect any for at least six weeks, could be longer. I have arthritis and bursitis in my hips that yells at me occasionally and I don't like it. I also have it in my left shoulder, the one I just had an MRI on because I now have a frozen shoulder along with the other nasty stuff. Anyway, I had four very unsuccessful weeks of physical therapy and cancelled the last two weeks because it was only causing more pain, not less. My doctor said the next step would be surgery. I'm trying this Joint Juice in the hopes that it will help with the pain and I'll be able to use my arm normally again, thus eliminating the frozen shoulder issue (over time, of course). Have you used Joint Juice or any other form of glucosamine and chondroitin? Did it help? Have you seen any significant improvement in your pain or ability to move? I'm wondering if I should postpone any plans for surgery until I've taken this for a few months first to see if it helps but don't want to put it off if it doesn't do much, if any, good.

Hello there Marti! I guess you've dragged my butt to mylot once again! LOL I'm not here very often these days but hey, once in a while is ok, I guess. My dad drank those drinks when he could afford to buy them and he said they did help however, he changed and went with something different and he said these helped him a lot more which is called Dr Franks pain relief spray. It's a spray that you put directly in your mouth. I'm not sure how often or how it works exactly which is one of few regrets I have since my dad's passing. I should've asked more about different things that he did including household things but I didn't realize how much impact he had with what he did. Anyway, check out Dr Franks products and maybe try them out. You might be surprised!

Yes, with MSM. Pill form. It has helped a lot, helps my mother in law too. You do reach a point where it doesn't help, I guess. Walking helps too...

I've already been walking more since the weather started cooperating a bit more with outdoor activities, well, except for days like today where it's scorching hot out there. I do move around more inside the house on days like this, though. Do you know how long it took for it to start showing any appreciable results? It's probably different for everyone. I've heard everywhere from six weeks to six months. I hope it's not six months for me but my track record for things like this isn't too good. I'll still give it a shot and hope for the best. I can't afford surgery right now (the down-time, not the cost). Sigh.

I'll try this Joint Juice for a few more weeks and if I don't notice any change, I'll try the MSM. Thanks for the tip.

MSM didn't work for you? I know you said the glucosamine and chondroitin didn't. It's worth a try, anyway. I've taken just the glucosamine and chondroitin for about a week now but I've been taking this 3-in-1 (MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin in one pill) for a day now and it claims to show relief within seven days so we'll see. If it doesn't work, I suppose my next step is surgery. I'd just like to do whatever I can to see if I can get rid of the pain before going under the knife again. Thirty-one surgeries in one lifetime is too many for anybody.

Hi Mental, I've never heard of it or tried it. I used to give my mom a mixture of 2 parts pectin(used to make jellies) and 1 part grape juice. It was a natural remedy that someone told me about. The grape juice has to be the REAL 100% juice. She had severe athritis and she swore that worked better than anything. I used to make up batches of it and she would drink a tall glass of it in the morning and one in the evening. She swore by it. It couldn't hurt to try and it doesn't taste bad.

http://www.ehow.com/facts_6496606_grapejuice-arthritis.html I gave you the recipe wrong...it's been years since I've made it but here is an article and recipe. Not sure what the Pectin has to do with it but it does. Jelly in your belly?? well, it could be worse, right?

But, wouldn't that make grape jelly in your tummy? (Just kidding. ) What does the pectin have to do with it? Is it something that lubricates the joints? I do drink 100% grape juice almost every day. I like it for it's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

I have never heard of Joint Juice and have no experience with glucosamine and chondroitin. But I have had good experiences from taking MSM (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane) and know of others who have also had great results after taking it when everything else they tried did not work. It is a sulphur substance that is naturally found in plants and can do wonders for joint soreness as well as digestive issues. I know someone who used it successfully for digestion too.

Thank you, Bill. You are the second person to mention MSM so I have decided to get some and give it a try. I will finish the Joint Juice that I have left but start the MSM as soon as that is finished.

I don't know if this is the same thing but a long time ago, I was maybe 5 years old, I developed a very nasty intestional infection. It was so bad that I had convulsions. My doctor prescribed sulfur pills. They were the most horrible tasting things I had ever put in my mouth at the time but they got rid of that infection!

We have MSM in powder form which is less processed and more natural than pills. It does not have a nice taste, but it is not what I would call horrible, just bitter. I have not had it in pills so I can't comment on the taste of them. It assimilates better into the body if taken with vitamin C so I either stir it into a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice or most often put it into my daily smoothies with orange juice or Camu Camu powder or Goji Berries.

I've finally found the combination that works! It's something called Move Free Advanced by Schiff. It has glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) plus vitamin D3. I've been taking that for about two weeks now and it's made an incredible difference! The pain in my neck is completely gone and the pain in my shoulder has been cut by half, enough for me to exercise it more and increase my range of motion. I would definitely advise taking this to anyone with joint issues. The pills are HUGE so I cut them in quarters with a pill splitter. I could take it cut in half but in forths is even easier to swallow. I wanted to let you know how much it has helped me so far so you can see if it helps you, if you'd like.

Have you tried any forms of medications that are out there that can help with some of the joints? I know with my Fibromyalga I take neurontin, and wonder if it would help any with your type of pain. Sorry to hear things like this are happening, and hope you can find something that will help you. Will be Praying for you that you can find some relief besides having to have the surgery.

The idea is to fix the problem naturally, not kill pain. I'm already on two things for my fibromyalgia pain, Savella and tramadol, and they are pretty effective for that. This glucosamine and chondroitin claim to help add collagen and lubricate joint cartilage, thereby eliminating the cause of the pain. I can say that I do not have the pain in my neck that I had been experiencing lately so that's something, at least. I have arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis and a torn rotator cuff in my shoulder which has led to a frozen scapula so there's a lot of pain in that shoulder, especially when I move it. I'm hoping that this can help lubricate the joint enough to stop at least some of the pain. That way, I will be able to move it more and deal with and eliminate the frozen scapula. Now, since writing this discussion, I've heard about MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) and it sounds better than the glucosamine and chondroitin. After looking it up, I've found that there are products with these three things combined so I'm going out today to pick some up to see if they work faster. If I can fix this issue without surgery I'll be so very happy since I've already had 30 surgeries in my lifetime... more than enough for anybody. But, if it comes down to another surgery, I'm okay with it since I'm at the point in my life where I'd just think of it as just one more surgery and, if it provides the relief I need, it'll be worth it. But, I'm going to try every natural method I can find first.

I've heard of it, but I've never tried it. Fortunately for me, I really don't have the need to use such a thing, and I hope it stays that way.

I don't know much about the one that starts with a 'c', and I don't know much about Joint Juice although I've heard of it. However, I've heard people rave about taking glucosamine supplements, so I assume it will work in a juice. It certainly cannot hurt.

From what I've read (I did a couple articles on the subject) frozen shoulder is a problem with the tissue surrounding the joint, not the joint itself. I don't think joint juice will help but it can't hurt and it could help your other joints. I took glucosamine and chondroitin for awhile once but didn't notice any appreciable results but that's just me. It can't hurt and it might help your other joints so I'd say go for it. I hope you won't need surgery but thank God they have all sorts of great stuff these days to fix us.

I know the frozen shoulder is a side effect of not moving the shoulder enough or avoiding as much use of it as possible. I'm hoping that, if the pain in my shoulder subsides at least some I'll be able to move the shoulder more and relieve the issue of the frozen shoulder. A lot of the exercises I was doing in physical therapy were to help make the scapula move better and loosening up the surrounding tissues and I've continued doing them at home. We shall see, huh? I'll probably end up having surgery. That seems to be the story of my life. Sigh.

I think you have to take glucosamine/chrondroitin preparations for a few weeks before you begin to notice any positive effects from them. My mother's hands were crippled up with arthritis, but there was one thing which did help her a lot and that was evening primrose oil. Tiger Balm may help ease the pain, but it won't make it go away. Have you visited an osteopath who may be able to help you learn ways to hold your body when you walk, sleep etc., so as to cause the minimum of pain?

What does evening primrose oil do? I've heard of it but never thought to see exactly what it does. I am now taking MSM along with glucosamine and chondroitin. This new formula claims to show results within seven days so I'll just have to wait and see. My arthritis isn't generally too bad. I go through periods where I have pain in my hips for a few days, in my thumbs for a few days and the problems in my shoulder wave in and out. The biggest issue I have with my shoulder is the frozen scapula but that will only be fixed if I can eliminate the arthritis pain which has flared since my SUV's hatch came down on it hard about 6 or 7 months ago. If I can eliminate enough pain to allow me to move around more, I know it will start me feeling better all over because I'd really love to be able to take longer walks and I'm well aware of the health benefits associated with walking. No, I haven't seen an osteopath. I'm really at the first stages of this pain, well, pain worth mentioning. I'll put that on my to-do list, though, just in case. Thanks for the tip!

I took the glucosamine and chondroitin stuff for a long time and it did no good. Later on I discovered a more expensive wy of taking and it didn´t do any good either. It did help me to take long warm showers and to move my joints. Now that I´m living a very sedentary life, my knees ache a lot. I wake with my knuckles hurting, but rubing mt hands under very warm water helps a lot. As I hate to spend more water, I wash my undies by hand killing two birds with one stone.

I do that whenever I've been outside gardening and have dirt under my fingernails or stains on my fingers from pulling weeds. I'll hand-wash something which, of course, really cleans my hands. Two people here have mentioned MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) as an excellent joint relief so I'm going to give that a try once I've finished the Joint Juice I have left.

There are several antiinflamatory ointments, I have tried some like arnica. They help some, but I don´t knoe if it´s because I rub and rub

Hi Ward, I hope your physician diagnose exactly what you have, so that you will be healthy again. I had also some problems with my health the last and currently year. But nothing with artritis or bones. Anyway, I wish that you recover well again.

Thank you, Rick. I may end up having surgery to totally correct my problem but that's okay. I've had lots of surgery already so one more won't upset me as long as it makes me feel better. But, I'll try this supplement first to see if it helps and how much it helps.
