Shoes stored in closet did not age well

Since I work at home I have clothes and shoes that I wear around the house and others that I wear when I go out to do errands, etc. Well the shoes I was wearing around the house were starting to wear out and so I thought I would start using the go out ones around the house(both the in house and go out were running or tennis shoes) and dig around in my closet to see if I had any old shoes I could use for going out. I found an old pair of Levi brand shoes that had a leather top and rubber soles that looked hardly worn(I don't remember why I had stopped wearing them a long time ago). So I tried them this morning and the soles felt a little sticky on the carpet and even more so on the tile in the kitchen. So after only a few minutes, I decided it might not be a good idea to drive wearing them. That turned out to be a good thing because before I could even get back to the bedroom to change them, very large pieces of the soles started falling off on the heels of both shoes. So just sitting buried under some things in the closest they had not aged well.
