A way to live without being enslaved

Many of us are seeking a way to live our lives without having to turn over our lives to a corporate office. Many of us wish to have a way out of needing to report to someone all of the time. The ability to take a vacation when we want to without having to ask off. The ability to take a day and lay around the house doing nothing if we want to without the worry of losing our jobs. The ability to do what we want when we want.
This is the way we all wish we could live. I live that way. I go where I want when I want to. I do what I want when I want to. All thanks to a company that frees me of the corporate shackle. The best part is this company also pays me to travel. I don't have to report to anyone. I work whenever I need or want money.
How many of you have this ability and work for a company like mine? Tell me about the companies you work for then.
If you do not have this ability and want it, tell me what would you do to get this freedom?

Right now my work gives me that freedom. As long as I've finished the hours needed for my work to be completed I can do whatever I want after that. I've worked in the call center industry for so long and the hectic schedule, stress and the long hours working took its toll on me that is why I am thankful that I've got a job now that gives me this much freedom and flexibility. I can't see myself working in an office setting again ever.

That is great that you have found a job that gives you your freedom! Congratulations! I have a few questions if you don't mind. One what is your company/what do you do? Second; how was this company presented to you for you to have responded to it positively?

I'm working with an online freelance company called Odesk. Its like an online hiring company were different companies around the world find contractors that they can hire. I think I was lucky to have an employer who only sets a few hours in a week for me to check on the work that is needed. It really depends on the work that you'll get since some of the work in Odesk you'll need to work 8-12 hours especially in the Customer Service department.

Working for yourself has many pluses. I know I've done it. It isn't for everyone though. You have to first make sure that there is enough work that will suppply you with all you needs and then you have to keep records for tax purposes. So much depends on the type of work you are doing and it requires a lot of self discipline.
When home with kids, it is almost impossible to get anything done.
And the biggest problem that I faced was that it seemed everyone knew that I was home during the day. They would randomly drop by or call. And yes, I would tell them that I had work to do and they'd say, "Oh well I'll judt be here for a minute not realizing there are others who do the same darn thing.

no spouse this time around but I do take care of my grandson and I have friends that randomly drop by. When I worked for myself in the past, it was not for any particular company...I did my own work independently. I worked for various landlords, cleaning apartments when people moved out so that they could be ready to rent and I also cleaned for tenents so they could get deposits back. I also did cooking for an elderly man and many mending jobs. At one point I did daycare but on that I did have set hours even though I did not answer to anyone. Yes, I'd do it again maybe if I had enough work lined up. What I don't miss is the worry that I wasn't going to earn enough each month to pay the rent and bills etc.

What if I told you I work for a company that you would start you up with a system that works. It would provide you with training and a website. It would provide you with a way to make extra money on the side and eventually provide the income that would remove the need for another job. It would eventually provide the income that would pay your bills, free you of debt, pay for you to travel and then some depending on how much work you're willing to put into it. Would you consider betting on yourself and freeing yourself of enslavement?

I agree that working for yourself is not for everyone. It is hard to maintain an at-home work atmosphere when presented with friends or kids or spouses. I assume that this is your current situation of maintaining a household with children and a spouse?
Since you have worked for yourself in the past, if you were presented with a company that would allow you to work from home but only when you had the time to do so, you could do it with friends, it would only require maybe two hours a day, and you were provided with a system that kept records for you... would you consider trying to work for yourself again?
If so, what would be the best way for this company to present itself to you such that you would respond positively to the company?

Lots of people dream of the independence available to those who have plenty of wealth. It is perceived as the ideal life, but many people will never achieve that high status. Given that fact of life, we can look at all kinds of possible jobs and careers to support ourselves and our families. It is best to consider many different types of work. OFten times working for a company does feel like enslavement. I suspect working for a smaller company has many benefits, but you still have a boss who expects you at work on time.
Certainly, there are options to make money on line also, so I would not discourage anyone from doing that, just don't quit the day job too soon.

I agree with you. I find that we will always see the grass as greener on the other side and that high wealth wont be attained by all. But finding a company that would allow yourself to start working on the side of your day job and slowly build to the point where you no longer would need a day job would be the true ideal. If you were presented with a company that wouldn't give you a boss other than yourself and would allow you to put in as much work as you were able or willing. A company that would eventually provide you with an income that would let you quit the day job and would sustain you. Would you take the chance to be free?

When I teach full time in a permanent contract I can go on trips overseas in the school holidays. If I do a teaching contract I can go off traveling when it ends. For example I taught in a school on a maternity contract then I went off traveling to New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. I came home and did temporary work before landing my next teaching contract. The company you work for sounds ideal to me. I am glad you have lots of freedom in your career.

I actually am still in college while I'm working for this company. I am studying to be a professor in university in Religious Studies and Philosophy. So it is interesting that you post here as a teacher in regards to the freedoms from the corporate shackle. I've been using this company to support myself through college and there's even a promise of being able to generate an income that will help pay off my student loans.
Are you teaching in grade school or university? In the US or Europe? How hard is the competition to land a permanent teaching contract? Does the pay give you the financial freedom you desire?

I work as a part time telephone interviewer, my company is Asia's market research company but is very strict, we have to do interviews in order to keep the job, I am scared because lately no one answer my call, I scared losing the job soon. If you don't mind, may I know what kind of company you work in? That offers you so much flexibility?

I think it is everyone's dream to live without being enslaved, however, everyone is being enslaved, regardless of rich or poor, master power or have no power.Sometimes i think it is human instinct to master others, and then others will fight for their own rights. So every society full of stuggle, unequal and so on,and it is impossible to find a way of totally free, although it is everyone's beautiful dream.

Sorry for the late response. That sounds like a very Freudian and Marxist philosophy you have there. I think there will always be greed that overcomes within humans that causes enslavement. But I believe we can free ourselves if we're willing to bet on ourselves enough to be willing to fail and try again over and over.

I doubt if that is true. There are plenty of people who don't like all these responsibilities and also are not able to manage themselves/own business. Also there are plenty of people who been there and don't want that anymore. I am one of them. I don't feel the need to be in charge, to have all these responsibilities, to work day and night, always have a lack of time for me. I want to be free (free of this) that is my only goal. BTW even if you don't need to report anymore (work for someone) you still have to report, since if you start for yourself there will always be people or organisations, the tax etc you have to report.

I agree that there are plenty of people who do not want to the responsibilities of managing their own business and find it as tiresome as working for someone else. But I am confused slightly on your comment of 'being free of this', could you specify what it is you seek freedom from please?
