Snakes In A Garden

In the story of Genesis it speaks of a serpent that tricked Eve into eating fruit from the tree of knowledge. The tree of knowledge was a tree that bore fruit, which lay in the midst of the garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were told they could eat from any plant, but they must never eat from that tree. Genesis 3:3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’? ” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” 10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from? ” 12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me —she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush[b] your head, and you will strike his heel.” In many churches it is taught that the serpent was actually the devil disguised as a snake. If this is the case then why would God punish the snakes? Was it really not the devil in disguise, but just a bad snake? Or is the entire story not literal and have some kind of meaning behind it?

It is obvious and clear for every Muslim, that our enemy as human beings is the Devil not a mere serpent, after reading the story in the Holy Qura'n, in the Bible, and in the Gospel of Barnabas, I can assure you that the Biblical story is incomplete, since there is no mention of a devil, only a serpent did the Job! and thus the Bible is not dependable source regarding this story. to fully understand the story you can read it in chapters 39,40 and 41 in the Gospel of Barnabas. http://www.barnabas.net/chapters.html

It is just a story or rather two stories put together and it was rather a silly story and should be ignored

Oh yes! I remember seeing a documentary about that recently. Something about women in the Bible on SBS network - sorry, I can't recall what it was called exactly. That account spoke very highly of women, whereas the Christian Church has denigraded, tortured & killed women from almost its very begining. Eve & women in general get the blame from the Church for man's fall from grace. Such a ghastly history! Give it a read sometime...

I have wondered the same thing. It was far too early at that point for there to be a "devil."

I don't really know. I've always heard he was here way before us.

Point is dont trust a snake, though they may seem to have a good intention. A friend is going to lead you in directions that will profit you for not just this life but the next one to come

Yes, there have been many discussions on this topic. Most of the best responses I've seen suggest such stories are written allegorically & have a very important, timeless message, or messages within them. I've seen documentaries on this topic as well. Why a snake? Why would God punish his own creation that he made good from the beginning? Is it even possible for a snake to be evil? Or even to tempt mankind? You need to go plowing through the Old Testament & find every reference to snakes. There was a time in history where the snake was considered very good, with great healing powers, associated with spiritual wisdom, etc, etc. Throughout history, there has always been a "conflict" between the priesthood & the mystics, prophets and those who practiced spiritually. What a clever idea to make their snake symbolism look evil by associating it with the devil! It is important when reading scripture to discern what was written in there by the priesthood over many, many generations & that which came directly from the great prophets & Jesus himself. Unfortunately, there's too much of the former & precious little of the latter in an uncorrupted form. In all this we would do well to remember that the Holy Bible was compiled not for our spiritual benefit, but primarily to defend & support Catholic Dogma & Doctrine.

There is one reference where it was used for good. What was that story with Moses and Aaron where they put the snake on a staff, and whoever looked at it was healed? I'm too lazy to look it up right now.

I think the one you're after is in Numbers 21:9 - from the Standard Authorized Version: "And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived."

From what I have read and learned, the serpent is actually Satan who disguised himself to trick Eve. Definitely it is not a serpent since serpent cannot talk. I believe in the bible and so I believe in that story. You are right that some people who consider this story as fable or just a result of mere imagination. It is their belief so we cannot force them to believe us, vice versa. The story of Adam and Eve is written in the bible to inform us what really happened in the past. This is also a good example to people who disobey God. This is a reminder that being disobedient will not do any good to us.

I beleive the whole Bible, and it seems that the snake at one point didnt crawl and could speak, wondered myself if any of the others could speak as well, even in THE WORD we see that GOD gave speach to a donkey, anyway doesnt say that it was a suprise that the snake did talk, know if the snake was wise and crafty and could speak, I thank GOD that HE did curse them and brought them to another place, already we are bombarded by so many of the devils devices to draw us away from seeking GOD'S WILL.

Satan tempted Adam and Eve to eat from the forbidden tree, after the expulsion of God and verily the earth refused to prostrate to Adam after his creation God made them returned and ate from the tree .. The Qur'an mentions the story : Al-A'raf: 11-25 , and in other places in Quran
