We all know Sherlock Holmes from the detective novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In his novels Doyle was always succeeded in leading readers to the climax without breaking the suspense. He always stated that the difference between Sherlock Holmes and an avereage person (like Dr.Watson) is that everyone see thigs but HE observes it. He always see the least speck of dirt in his companion's boots. It seems to me something exotic. Anyway, all consideres Sherlock Holmes as symbol for intelligence. But i want to ask you one thing. If Sherlock Holmes have such a wisdom, we expect that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle should have extraordinary power of observation. And he may be also such a genius. But the truth is that he always believed that "earth is flat" in his entire lifetime. Don't you feel something odd? So i think Sherlock Holmes as mere imagination of a crazy author. But there are still people who send letters to BAKER STREET reagarding the case details. All are crazy!!! what do you think?

I am a great believer that great authors do not write novels, their characters do. What i mean by that is if an author creates a character he becomes the character and the character then takes over and writes the novel. if you immerse yourself in their writing you could also become that antagonist and most likely you could write a story very much in the style of that genre. Or i could be talking total mince!

i was not aware he believed the earth was flat but i do know he had an enormous believe in the afterlife. He squandered most of his fortune on trying to prove it. To be honest i do not have an issue with him having strange believes. i do not think unusual beliefs equate to an inability to have a adventurous imagination, quite the opposite in fact. Also the theory that he believed the world to be flat seems strange as it had been proven to be round almost 300 years before he was born.

So if Sherlock Holmes says that earth is flat, then we can understand that the author alos believe so. But how such a great observer and thinker can belive idotic ideas like that?

Dear friend, It is of no doubt that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a talented novlist. I could if such good novels come to the screens as movies, we would able know more better writers. May be the Character Sherlock Holmes is really taken the role of whan the author have to convey. Moreover if we read those police investigations I feel there could be lots of nice criminal stories to make up.

I also agree that Sir Arthu Conan Doyle is a talented novelist. But what about his intelligence. It seems to me odd that he have a little knowledge about science and the world. Because he didn't believed in the roundness of the earth. What do you feel about it?

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle definitely had a lot of talent. Although I haven't read many of his stories, and it's been a while since I've read any of them, I definitely did enjoy them, and were well written. There's no doubt in my mind that he's one of the best.

I applaud Doyle's resolute stance in his belief in the flatness of the Earth. I quite imagine that it is this firm belief that gave shape to his Sherlock Holmes character. As you, troublee, have said, the Holmes character is quite observant. I believe that quality comes from a firm rooting, or a firm foundation, if you will. As we know, it is impossible to have a firm stance (literally and figuratively) if we are standing askew, such as balancing on a ball. Rather, for a firm stance, we must be solidly anchored on terra firma. Thus, I can see how Sir Doyle's firm belief in a flat Earth will give rise to Holme's brilliance.

hi troublee. we are all a little crazy in one way or another. and sherlock holmes was crazy like a fox. if he were just like everyone else, he would not have had the gifts and talents he had. sir arthur conan doyle was a genius for using holmes' quirks for good rather than evil. if sherlock holmes the character stated he believed the world was flat, it may have been part and parcel of his idiosyncracies. sherlock was the first of his kind in detective literature, his successors being the astute hercule poirot of agatha christie and the more modern television detective, the celebrated adrian monk.
