we do in canada too except in Quebec where I live. A woman cannot take her husband's name. She must keep her own.

Hi Ms. Rose so in Quebec where does they get their surname? Here in my country we normally changed our surname and get it from our husband.

she keeps the name she had at birth,
So if you were born Sally Brown, and you married Tom Jones, you are not Sally Jones, you are still Sally Brown

In my country we legally have our father´s surname first, followed my our mother´s surname. It does not change when we get married. My brother, who is a scientist and writes papers for international journals, uses my mother´s surmane in the middle, but just for that. My children have my husband´s surname and then mine.

i've got mine from my father. and so as from my mother. confusing? no. it just happened that they have the same family or surname but they are not relatives, they claimed.
so when anyone asked, what's the meaning of DC in your middle initial when your surname also initialed DC. i tell them, don't be confused. i have the same surname and family name. but don't ask anymore as i can't tell you what exactly happened with parents. they're not relatives in the first place.

My married name is German and so is my birth name. All of my families have been in the USA since before it was freed from England. Due to that we have no German customs that I know of. One of my familys is Jewish but the other is not. Again it has been so long since any of these people came here to the USA both families, while not religious, if pushed would claim to be Christian. I was sent to Catholic school for gramer school. When I was 9, 10 and 11 years old.

In India surname -- this is mostly one's father's name -- some people do add their native place with surname. my children have my name as their surname. After marriage the woman will add the name of her husband besides her name.

Hmm you have your father surname but your siblings are with your mother, why it is not the same with yours? Just curious.

Hello, lyn. My name comes from Scotland. My family moved from there in 1846, to Salt Lake City, the following year.
Our family name goes back to Mary queen of Scots. It has only a few other spellings, but the pronunciation has stayed the same. (Except for one.) Stewart, Stuart, and Steward. The name means "servant". Or someone who oversees a household.
I really like my last name but always hated my first name.
Now I dont have a problem with either.

My surname comes from my father's father. It is a very unique family name because it has never been conquered by those countries that conquered and occupied our country for a long time. I know the history of our country so I know where most surname comes - Spanish names. That is the reason why a lot of residents in the areas occupied by the Spanish have surnames like those Spanish names. I am proud to have a unique surname and it's wonderful. Have a great day ahead.
