Hi friends and lotters
As a kid, I was always fascinated by the wonders of the world. Unfortunately there are only 7 of them. Then they cam up with some list of 7 wonders of the modern world. Great.
But then why are these wonders limited to a count of 7? I mean they could have been 10 or even 5 or even some other number. Normally the top lists have a count of 10 or even hundred. As the world is so big with so many great wonders, is 7 an apt number?
Ever thought about this? If yes, can you provide an idea to this 7?
I think this 7 wonders stems from the fact that there are 7 continents, the ancient people thought that there are 7 planets and some also say Seven Seas (though the count or number of seas is bigger), or Seventh Haven - or at times I feel that when the 7 was decided to be given importance, the humans had known only 7 digits
Can you shed some light on the Seven?
Cheers,
theSids.
And hey I also read about the constellations of stars which too have 7 stars

Hi mamu
Yes, you have made me to think a lot. I dont think that 7 wonders are picked up from seven continents. For the first time when 7 wonders were picked up, it did not represented 7 continents as among them 2 were from Turkey, Egypt and Greece each and the last one was from Iraq and all of them were from four great civilizations as Greek, Persian, Babylon and Egyptian.
It may be because 7 is a sacred number from the point of each religion like us. We have saath phere(the 7 round on marriage), Suraj ka Satwa Ghora(the 7 horses of lord Sun) and many more.
Have a nice time.

Hi mamu
yes dear there are those Saath Phere, Satwa Ghoda but why the 7?
That is the question - why that number was 7 why not 8? or 5?
I know that the initial seven wonders were not from all continents. So that is a mystery yet that why some continents were left out! Maybe they werent discovered by those who framed the 7 wonders.

mamu, for your own consolation, just try to believe that all those 7 wonders are the representatives of the 7 colors of rainbow.
Exactly, i think those were not discovered although existed or may be they ignored it and made a list of 7 without knowing that it will be continued as 7 after so many years.

Resembles 7 continents - read somewhere or learned in school? No Idea, something comes up in the mind, but not clear. You got the laptop for your wife? In fact I commented for that topic and I could not send it, just before completing the discussion, page got hung as there was some program running on the comp and I had to quit all. Then I didn't feel to write again.
Is she happy? Hope you enjoyed the Sunday today and have a peaceful night.
Thank-s

Don't forget, that in the Holy Bible, God presents seven as the number of completeness, and He is the creator of the universe.
On a broader scale, we often see lists like 5 truths about ... or 3 ways to do .... With any such list, an author has assigned a number, but it most likely is not the only number, because seldom is such a list complete.

Hi djbtol
Now that you bring religion into this, well, this might be one factor as most of the things that we follow are guided by religion many a times.
Though I dont want to hurt anyone's sentiments, but I still get more thoughtful and need to ask - Why was this 7 presented to us as a number of completeness? Going by my little knowledge, 8 is made of two circles - 0 and 0, Symmetrically, it is much better than 7 and even being a circle can reflect the life cycle which many religions say - starts from a point and ends at the same point.

Hi thesids,
May because 7 stands for "LUCKY SEVEN"... By the way, whatever the organizer or the founder of such wonders of the world for sure they have a reasons. Your questioning about such number - if you can observed also as you said the world is very large which consists of many counties - why the organizers of the pageant selecting only 1 + 4 the winners - why say 10 or 20 winners. Their reasons are very un-thinkable. there are many questions of Why happening in real world.

Hi visavis
The pageant allow all people from all countries to participate and I understand that they follow the top 3 or four from them - trying to select their best - but you are right - their thoughts and questions for deciding the winner is best known to them...
Yes, the 7 for LUCKY SEVEN might be the right answer, but then my question is why 7 was considered lucky. I mean why not 8 or 5?

HI Sids,
After the brainstorm session, its time for some Coffee.
Personllay, if i had to choose any no. I'd go for 7. why? Simple. In my language it is pronounced as 'Eezhu' and if i actually translate, then it says - 'GET UP'/ RISE, so prosper is good to hear which has a positive stride as well.
Ok, i also did some search and here is another set of explanations:
Practical explanation: (Mathematical)
Any number between zero and twelve has at least fifty connections that make it significant; seven is only one of a dozen that have multiple meanings. The seventh power of any number is both a square and a cube; seven metals used in alchemic "the Work"; and seven is conveniently both 3 and 4, which allows one to include those plenary meanings.
Seasonal and natural reason:
You asked about the number 7. I think it stems from observation of natural events and cycles in nature. There are 4 seasons, 28 days in each moon cycle, so 4 into 28 goes 7, hence 7 is a mystical and important number. It's probably as good an explanation as any as to why it's so important! You might also like to ponder on the Plough (Ursa Major) with its 7 bright stars going round the Polar Star.
Spiritual significance & Numerology :
7 is the sacred spiritual number – 'the energy of the mystics'.
The 7 vibration represents a special function of human life. It indicates the amount of learning one must amass, in the form of personal experiences known as 'sacrifices'.
The first cycle of 7 deals with the physical process.
The second cycle from ages 7 to 14 is marked by the development of feelings and emotions.
The third cycle from ages 14 to 21 focuses on the spiritual energy. This is with the 'light of spirit' begins to dawn into a maturing consciousness.
Time for another coffee...
Take care

Ah great. I was of the Indian belief where ones life was in 4 stages - something like - brahmacharya(from birth till marriage - 0-25years), grihasta(married life (25-50), Vanaprastha(starting to dedicate life to Lord - 50-75years) and then Sanyas(living like a sage/hermit 75+).
The 7 stages were well described in the poem - All the World is a Stage by Shakespeare in his play.
For the lappy...well the amounts in the bank are awaiting some spending which will happen for sure when my wife arrives (sometime near this weekend) or otherwise I might end up spending some of it (or even a majority of it on chocos and coffee and food
)... patience is killing me I guess

Perhaps the creator of the list could only count up to seven ... or got too tired trying to track down all the wonders that he or she just gave up after finding seven and figured that was a good place to stop.

I believe you are mentioning about the 7 - wonders, days, etc. A lot of that has been mentioned on this disucssion and so I could guess so. But dear, the question of mine is not about the 7 -things. I wanted to find out why was 7 given so much of special treatment!

As someone mentioned, in the Bible 7 is the number of completeness. I suspect one reason for this is that in Genesis we are told that God made the heavens and the earth in six days "and on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done and he rested.... from all his work he had done in creation." So creation was complete in seven days, thus seven is a number representing completeness. It's also the number of days in a complete week. As for the rainbow, God also created it and determined its colors. Only artists can add more by making pictures from their imaginations. But when it's raining and you see the bow in the sky, it will have the seven basic colors as they blend into each other.

Hi bagarad
This seems to be an interesting response. As you might be aware, I am not a Christian and havent read the Holy Bible, but in Indian mythology and somewhere I read that God did create the earth and hence it must have taken some time. Dont remember what or how much.
But then your response is interesting as from what I can guess, you want to say, God has had plans to make this 7 unique and special. Well, I know it can turn into a religion discussion if I continue asking my doubts and expecting them to be clarified, I would rather have to try to find the Holy Bible translated in English and read for myself. There is another response on page two too which mentions the Holy Bible.

Hi godson,
It's really difficult to shed some light on this as this seven wonders and all things related to seven are a mystery. All I know is that the number seven is considered a lucky number. I don't have an udea how it was considered the lucky one, of all the numbers that we can use. If you research more about the number seven, you will find out that this number was mentioned many times in the Bible. And that it took 7 years before the temple in Jerusalem was built.
Apart from that number being mentioned in the bible, I have read that Ancient Greeks considered it a perfect number. Arabs were said to built seven holy temples, while Goths and Japanese worshipped seven Gods.
Amazing yet mind-boggling!

Hi godmom
This response and a couple of others who mentioned the Holy Bible, have started to create an inquisitiveness in me to read and understand that Holy Book. I am sure I will find one in simple English. I love reading such mysteries and their answers. Sometimes I find the answers and many a times I get nothing except some additional knowledge.

Personally i think that there is a story behind the number of 7.
I love the number too, however i also failed to find a reasonable
reason for this.
Sure its a better number than other, could be special.

Honestly I don't know the answer. Let me guess something here. It would be some display made in the place where they worshipped as God. It would be converted to such things as seven wonder, seven world like that.

Hi viji
I think loneliness is the reason for all this over thinking. I have nothing much to do these days... work, some mylot (both are down as it is summers and I am feeling horrible to sit and type)
Never mind, I have some mind and I can share that with you... need a transplant? You can try the operation and I am ready to go for the surgey
Just make it bloodless and I would be fine - you know my illness has made me anemic

, so I made that comment in the expectation to get some more funny comments. It is hard too here in Delhi.
We don't need any surgery. Just find a new instrument with the languages you learned in computer and build so that we will transfer our brain as like data transfer.

I have no idea too? Maybe because the number 7 is considered a lucky number by many since who knows what age. Maybe even the medival age. hahahahaha. Its mostly impossible to ascertain why only 7 but maybe... i have no idea. You can use your imagination and accept things as it is. Some things are just moved by trend and fashions

Odd that you write this discussion. Just yesterday I had a conversation at work with one of my customers about the number 7. The weirdest thing happened. I was working the cash register as I've done for years. All of a sudden Pump # 7 lit up as if there was a gas sale on it. There was no sale on it. There could be no sale on it. Why? We only have 4 gas pumps. There has never been a pump #7. I tried everything to remove the "sale". I told this customer and she told me that it meant that Jesus was looking over me. We then got to discussing the number 7. I once read up on the numbers 3,7, and 12...They all seem to be pretty significant. 7 days in a week, 12 months in a year. 12 numbers on the clok. , 12 inches.
