Our Race Name are always mispronounced...

Philippines

Hello Lotters, So weird but probably I need to mention this issue to let a few people know. I noticed this most of the time in youtube, When our race's name is pronounced, called Philipinos, Philippians, it's like that sometimes even in mylot or other blog when there's an issue involving Filipinos. I just remembered one time while watching American Idol Commentaries about the contestants. One Japanese fan mentioned how she is happy to have so many Philippinos Supporting her, though i kinda corrected her on that. Don't know when was the last time I mispronounced someone's race here, but it shows how we are little known to be important even to mention to the world, who cares now isn't it? Hope am not overreacting because from my Experience, i always announce their race names quite correctly, sometimes i even have to search it on wikipedia. Not a Referral link. http://www.filipinawives.com/WhatsInAName.htm

Well I guess we have our own identity but I guess we can only just repect those that are unaware of our nationality spelling. I guess not all are as intellectual as we are when it comes to spelling of our race name. I think it confuses them from spelling since our country starts with "PH" then they might construe that our race name must be spelled starting with "PH" as well. Of course our history states that our nationality was named after a Spanish King Felipe that is why our country was called "Filipinas" which eventually became "Philippines" more like English name for "Philip". Of course most foreigners are not aware of this anymore since it was not even mentioned in their studies. I think we should just understand them instead of getting insulted or annoyed because that is how they understood how our race is called/spelled.

Well logically speaking, I think sometimes our nationality is quite hard for foreigners to understand why a citizen of Philippines is called Filipino unless they have the sense of history behind the name which is not known to many foreigners. If you will look at many nations their nationality is easily identifiable by the name of their country like Japan=Japanese, America=Americans, Canada=Canadians and so on and so forth it is I guess our country that spells Philippines=Filipinos.

Hello Rsa101, Indeed it came from the name of Phillip in england though. i felt worried but not exactly insulted because we are no strangers in asia i just can't believe that some people actually don't get our race name right. i guess this happening when we are no longer that economically powerful like before

You know what confuses foreigners more about our Nationality name.... is the term Filipina. The thing is we should use that term to foreigners cos its confuses the heck out of them, Just use the gender neutral term Filipino. I am kinda annoyed when foreigners spell our nationality as Phillipino. I dont know but it annoys me, Our Nationality is called Filipino because its based from ourn country's spanish name which is "Islas del Filipinas"

Hello CaptainAlbert, I think Filipina is a female ethnic in the Philippines and then Filipino is a male ethnicity in the country. well, things are different now and then we are called either Filipinos/Filipinas or simply Pinoys. but am glad most people call us filipinos here, thanks for sharing and have a nice day

Yeah, it happens. But I don't really bothered by those. I just understand that they never care to check the correct pronunciation of it. Sometimes I just laugh at them. lol

Hello tess_quinain, yeah you're right about this. it didn't bother me at first i thought it was just joking indeed. but you know, it's something that we should take a noticed too, but maybe because others are misprouncing their names too? could be. thanks for sharing, have a nice day

I do not get offended but, yes, it would be much nicer if they bother to check the right spelling or the right pronunciation first. It took me a while to master "Ethiopian". Have a nice day!

I think it's our own fault why others tend to miss spell our race name. I think they're even right. The word is Philippines, it's not Filippines. So people who are not that familiar with us wouldn't be able to guess and use Filipino or even pinoy.

Hello Ybong007, indeed maybe it's should be our own responsibility correct them i think. a foreigner would never know the difference in case they would actually be considered history savy most specially about the Philippines. unfortunately, am not a history savy of other countries so i might mispronounce names too

i think it is good that you have brought up this discussion, letranknight25. it is important for us to learn from each other and have respect for each other's perspectives and cultures. i have an asian friend who told me that she was very upset when people called her "oriental", she stated that oriental is for rugs and asian is for people! i was glad that she told me this....i think this situation can be universal, i have been upset several times when people do not understand or respect or misprounounce my scottish names (both maiden and married)! peace to you, letranknight25.

Hello psychoartist, I think that's what am going to do from now on and that is to understand other people's culture and how they are called. Would you believe me that I still have trouble how to address our indian friends here via race name? because there are also called native indians in the United States. peace to you too

People just need to learn how to pronouce things and learn about different cultures and races! My friend is Asian but was born in the US. When people ask where she is from she says united states and people look at her funny.!.!.! Really??? People of different races can be born in the United States

Hello Lauraleigh, I think it's very normal if you mentioned if your from United States, she never really did say where her bloodline or race actually originated to. this reminds of a movie about discrimination about people in hongkong. another thing is that she was an art teacher and then teaching a child. all of sudden the child ask for her ethnicity, then she answered she's from America.

I used to do a job that involved recording where people were born. I can't begin to tell you the number of times I had to correct the spelling of Philippines. However, bad as that is, at least you can half way understand it because it is another country! Can you just see how often I had to correct the spelling of a COUNTY in Texas? McLennan/McClennan/MacClennan/McLenan/McLennon/etc, etc, etc!!! You'd think if their children were BORN there they would know how to spell it!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McLennan_County,_Texas

Hello Elicbxn, indeed you are right but it does need a great of education for the person to announce the name race well. but there are some that are very hard to pronounce simply because our way of accent isn't use to it. aren't they supposed to be called texan's? well, that is something that needs to be pronounce it as well as other things aside from race.

hi lk! comments from american idol blogs/news/stories have lots of those. hehe i don't mind if they mispronounced for as long as it wasn't used in a derogatory manner and no malicious intent. it's a matter of not being well-informed or making an effort to ask or search for it. in some cases i have encountered in other countries, there is no "filipino" in their dictionary. people from the philippines are called "filipina" according to their translations.

Is it mispromounced or misspelled? If we are not saying it correctly could you please break it down by syllables. Is there an o or not. My Sister in Law is from there but I never noticed a difference in how I pronounce it and how she does.

Doesn't really bother me much, but you've got a point. We are not known that well that people from the other side of the world don't even know how to call us.

Hello Toniganzon, but i guess others who are names of race aren't that bothered at all when being called or misspelled. because there's a lot of human race out there that has different ethnicities.

Yes , I have heard them all. I am Gemanium, germanian,Italic,Italiano,Americano. Americanian! It is funny to listen to kids try to pronounce some of the different peoples and races. what about the Mayans, I bet they have ben called Nayanites and mayanaise! Sometimes it is funny, sometimes not, sometimes just innocent mistakes. We are humanians! I hope to make light of the topic with humor and wish not to offend.

Well, i prefer calling and got used to called germans is the term i got used to call the people of germany. that wasn't hard to boot. but i guess for the Filipinos is something that needs clarification to other people who misspelled it because, i realize now how complicated it is.

There is no perfect pronunciation for foreign people. Can't blame them due to their accents, foreigners tend to mispronounced the words or use slang. That is a twang, since it is not their native language. It will be appreciated if they study first the word before saying it in public.
