I never thought so before but now I'm having second thoughts and I'm not referring to fast food restaurants.

If I ate on the restaurant, I do give tip depending on the service of the food server. But for take out meals, I don't remember that I gave any tip.

Just like you, I always tip for eat-in meals but I may have tipped once or twice on take out. On my latest take-out which prompted this question was that the bill was presented on a tray as I paid for the take out at the cash register. It felt a little awkward when the change was placed on the tray with the bill and I took all the change. And it was a decent restaurant.

I am not giving any tip in fast food restaurant. One of my colleague in my work was past employee of a fast food restaurant. She said that the tip coming from customers are not going to them, or part of it. It will just directly go to the management. So if your intention is to help the crew earn more by giving tip, it will not serve its purpose.

Thank you for your response and yes, I have heard stories about the management keeping all the tips or taking a certain percentage of the tips on eat-in meals.

I always tip the waitress and I try to tip decent. They work hard and their pay is so much lower than other jobs. They rely on their tips. My best friend is a waitress and I remember many times her complaining because people would refuse to tip because they did not like the food or the food was late in coming etc. If she took the order right and the cook screwed it up then it is NOT her fault and yet people blame her and she does not end up getting paid for her work as a result. I tried waitressing once and I quit after a couple of weeks. I was a single mom. So many people just did not tip because they didn't feel they should have to or for reasons beyond my control. I remember working a table of several people. I was friendly and they all agreed the food was good. They seemed happy with the service and yet I got 1.00 tip! The waitresses job is to take your order and be friendly and helpful. If your food is bad or takes too long, tell her and she will try to correct the problem.

Now a days, tipping is going out of practise because at many of the new restaurants and eating places-especially like Domino's, Pizza Hut, McDonald's, KFC , Barista etc, they already charge service tax. However, if we go to some general type of Restaurant, I do pay a small tip. It is not a fixed amount but it is what I feel paying like.

It depends on the restaurant, if the restaurant was a service charges that already attached in my receipt then I am not give tip anymore, but if there's no service charge I will think first before giving a tip. I always considered the attitude of the waiter/waitress and service of the restaurant before giving tip, if they nice and has good services I give tip even in a little amount just to show my gratitude to them. I know the feeling of receiving a tip because I worked as a waitress before, the feeling was so nice and good because you knew you did a great job. :)
