We always wanted to have a desktop. And so,for the past few weeks we are setting aside some money, enough to buy one this coming week. Yesterday, we finally decided to have a table for our computer. We went to different hardware shop and we find it that ready-made tables are expensive compared to a made-to-order ones. Finally, we settled to have it it worked by one of our neighbor who is a carpenter. We set the specifications. Good thing, he has available materials to make such. That is, I paid him right after he delivered the finished product. I wonder if I gave the money right before I stated the specifications and before starting to put up our nice table - would this be the same result.
I'm just curious, If everything else is in order, and in matters regarding job-orders, do you pay before the production or just after it has been produced? Do you have reservations that if you pay before anything else, it may be like half-cooked and not par with your standard or taste.

Whenever I enter into this type of agreement with someone I usually make a deposit. Maybe I would pay 25 percent before and 75 percent after the item is finished.
That way, both people know that they are each serious about exchanging money for labor.
I also believe it's important to have everything in writing so both people clearly understand what the other is expecting.

That's right sherrybelle. I think it is common practice to pay deposits when you have job orders.

For made to orders usually we need to deposit some amount.
Of course we can always cancel the order if it doesn't pass our standard.
I will never pay for a product that never worth what I am gonna pay.
That is why I choose a made to order because I want it the way I want and I want it to be unique.

I'm comfortable with paying a deposit and then paying the remainder upon delivery. After all, whomever is doing the work is taking a risk that their client might change their mind, or try to change the price after you've done all of the work.

I would rather pay after, but some things you can't do that with. Had he not had the materials ready, you would have had to purchase them and he'd want your money to do so with so that'd be an added expense in itself. Paying for those things would be a prior to it's completion step. Then the completed project would earn him his dues. Now of course if he didn't make it to your specifications he'd be out of money from his labor, and you out of money from the expense of the materials to make it.

Here in my country we used to pay after we already have glimpse of the finished product if we only order it to the carpenter. But in terms of made to order products we used to deposit 50% percent of the total amount and pay the rest after we received the products. :)
