Google/Goole and Search Engine!

I wanted to type www.google.com for a search, I mistakenly typed www.goole.com and I was to taken to the page. Surprisingly, it was also a search engine. I was amazed and asked if google also owns it. But I do not think so. I came to my mind, are there other search engine apart from google.com. Why is it that anytime you tell someone to find information online, you say just google it. Is google becoming than a search engine to becoming the name of the internet provider too? Does other searches get all their result from google? Why has google become a household name worldwide?
