Any other mylotters tried Valerian root? I bought some last week to try to help me with insomnia I have been having lately. Didn't notice much effect but this morning I just read the bottle and found that it recommended to take 5 capsules. I just took 2 when I tried it and didn't seem like anything happened. Has it worked for anyone else? On a side note my cat is crazy for the smell of it, I read it effects them like catnip. So wierd!

I've used Valerian and did not know it slowed down peristalsis, the movement of the smooth muscles of the bowel. Taking Valerian caused me to become impacted and having to go to the hospital for relief. lol If you use it be sure to keep track of your BMs (at least one a day) and drink plenty of water and eat lots of fiber! Be careful with any herb, they ARE medicines.

oh yea, forgot... Valerian does not PUT you to sleep, it merely relaxes you (muscles) so you can rest and eventually go to sleep.

Five capsules? I used to take it but not for insomnia. It did seem to make me super sleepy though. I don't remember ever taking five capsules, I think it was once once a day taht I took. Kind of concerns me that it says FIVE capsules.

I thought it was really wierd too, they were 450 mg capsules. Seems like a lot to me, I don't know if I could get to sleep with that many pills in my belly!

Here in our country, we have a pill named "Sleepasil" and its content is valerian root. I only take one of it whenever i felt that i would be up all night. I find it quite rather effective. It makes you feel groggy.
