communicate with strangers speaking a strange language in a strange place

Last sunday ,my friend and I went to the Yangshao brand valley,there was a caveman tribe in the valley which comes from Yunnan Province ,before we visited the tribe ,our tour guide told us actually they were not real sarages but the minority,they had a very different languge,so she taught us a few words to communicate with the cavemen.when we arrived the gate of the tribe,the tour guide reminded us to greet the caveman loudly ,the first time we failed ,the caveman expressed his discontent to us ,so we had to have another try,the second time we had succeeded.then we started to visit the tribe ,they lived in the cave ,and they didn't wear shoes ,they climbed up trees just like monkeys. their living style was very different from ours.if the tour guide hadn't told us a few words of their languages,we would have had no idea of how to communicate with the cavemen.their language is so weird to us . several weeks ago .one friend asked me a question :'how do you communicate with strangers with a language which you have never heard before?',i answered i would communicate with them through the body language.since i have visited the tribe .i realize i have the wrong answer.
