While shopping in one of the Malls the other ay I have come across a pleasantly surprising fruit about which I never heard of before – The Sweet Tamarind! This was beautifully packed in a laminated cardboard box with an attractive design with a label of Sweet Tamarind, premium quality. Being a South Indian tamarind is nothing new for me. But sweet Tamarind was definitely a discovery by me at the Mall! Having purchased the packet of 250gms, I was pleasantly surprised at the taste and flavor of this fruit. By looks this was similar to ordinary tamarind. It was ripened one so the outer skin got turned into hull and it could be easily be break opened! The inside fruit was looking like ordinary tamarind, but was bit darker in color! The taste was absolutely sweet with the flavor of Tamarind without any traces of sourness! This is a product from Thailand and the nutritive value of the fruit is given as under: Each 100gms of this fruit contains – 314 Calories of Energy 2.9 gm of Proteins 75.6 gm of Carbohydrates 4.7 gm of Fiber 4.4 gm of Ash 141 mg of Calcium 165 mg of Phosphorous 0.9 mg of Iron 0.46 mg of Thiamine 0.01 mg of Riboflavin 1.3 gms of Niacin and 75 mg of Vitamin C. This lovely fruit is being packed and sold in the Indian market at Rs.70.00 per 250 gms with a shelf life of one year. Having got this fruit in the market and did some research on this product and found that it is supplied thorough out the World by Thailand and many people like to use this fruit as dessert and also as a part of break fast. Have you ever seen this fruit or tasted it? If you can get a chance to try this fruit, I would strongly recommend it and I am sure you will appreciate my taste!

I don't like anything too sweet, especially in fruits. So my local tamarind fruits where I can still taste the sourness is fine with me...

Tamarind Snack - Tamarind snack is tasty
I like tamarind as a condiment as its sourness is appetizing especially with fish dishes. The tamarind used for such dishes are usually in a paste form. The sweet tamarind you mentioned here I think is a kind that was sweetened and is meant to be eaten as a candy or snack. Sweet tamarind is a popular snack here in my country, Malaysia. Thailand is the main producer of such tamarind snacks.

Hello Dear jkt ! I know tamarind is a condiment used to souring the dishes! We too use tamarind in India, specially in southern part of India while preparing fish! The sweet tamarind abut which I wrote is not a man made snack. It is a natural fruit which is very similar to tamarind but is very sweet in taste without any traces of sourness! The product about which I have written is marketed under trade name of the Pretty lady. This is a premium quality of sweet tamarind from Thailand. You can get details about this product on the net ! They are very much natural fruits with out any involvement of any human being in imparting the sweet taste. I could have given you the e mail ID but it goes against the rules of Mylot to do so here! But I am sure by doing simple search you will be able to get details about this fruit. Thanks a lot for the response. I liked your sincere participation! Happy Mylotting!

I discovered it 2008. It happened so that after office on one evening I visited a super market near my office to buy Potato Flake. This was the only supermarket in Hyderabad/Secunderabad that I knew where Potato Flake was available. There the saleswomen suggested me to buy this tamarind, according to her it was sweet in taste. Actually I am fond of sweets. And whenever I visited that supermarket I used to look or ask for new sweets which might have arrived in the market. That's why she probably suggested this to me. And yes it was great. After that I bought it quite often. Though after reallocating to Chennai, I have not seen it any of the near by supermarkets. I have already checked Relience, Nilgiris, Herritage and More supermarket around Tambaram i.e. where I currently I reside, and I got was disappointment.
