Reading or doing anything for that mater, you are learning. the day you stop learning is the day you die.

Of course gathering knowledge can make you "smarter." Reading is one of the best way to learn more things and you have to retain at least SOME of what you read.

I think it does. I know I've learned a lot more from reading than I ever learned at school.

sometimes. but then again not, my son is dyslexic and can not read and he is very very smart, because he keeps everything that he learns in his head.
